I just paid for Vantage and am having some buyers remorse after some major issues off the bat

  1. The render resolution over live link is completely broken. It just makes up a super low-resolution that has nothing to do with my actual 3ds max resolution and even when I fix it in vantage it doesn’t update the view port in Max. (see attachment)

  2. There doesn’t seem to be a way to apply LUTs or Flimic Tonemapping in the 3ds max viewport? This completely breaks my workflow as I need to see the compressed highlights when I’m editing the scene or it’s pointless… I figured out how to enable tonemapping in Vantage but even when it’s on, it doesn’t transfer that look to the viewport in Max.

    Is this all expected behavior? It seems incredibly unpolished.

Are you using only the in-viewport live link (Active Shade)? This is a new feature in V-Ray for 3ds Max and their team may be better able to answer about it. Try the “regular” live link from the Vantage toolbar in Max, which uses the Vantage window (you can set it to “always on top” with the pin button, top right).

I’d like to add, The fundamentals of Vantage seem excellent. But I have to agree that it seems when it comes to Vray and Vantage and an integrated workflow in 3Ds Max transitioning back and forth between CPU rendering and Vantage, it leaves a heck of a lot to be desired. That’s why I’m building my own bridges between the two. I’d be happy to collaborate with an internal team at Chaos if anyone wants to reach out.

Yes the in-viewport livelink

In the vantage Render dialog set resolution (it won’t work immediately, you’d need to exit and re-nter the Render window). Then set the larger width and length. Regarding highlights and postprocessing - render 32bit exr and edit the output in PS, ACR or VFB. BTW working in ACES completely solves burnt highlights issue.

@juliaav this doesn’t seem to make it back to the 3ds max viewport, where it’s still rendering at that very low made up resolution

Just type desired width value (make sure the camera is refreshed)

yeah that works for the vantage window…but the 3ds max viewport is still super blurry at that lower resolution.

Viewport is for playing, not production

Uhm, my point is that I don’t think it’s intended behavior. Why would I ever want to look at a 200px wide version of a rendering blown up in a viewport? It’s not what the videos show online and is obviously some kind of bug…

Hi, on point 1. Please provide a scene, it would be easier to reproduce.

On point 2. For this initial implementation we still do not have the ability to apply color corrections over the result. the reason is that we are using the RAW image instead the final one with all the effects on top of it from Vantage. This was required due to the fact that we have an additional color management in Max. We do plan to be able to apply color corrections from VFB and to match both results.

Yeah that doesn’t sound right - in relation to resolution - the image rendered in vantage should be what is sent over to the viewport.

For your LUT question - if you want to see a tonemapped image - you can set an OCIO config in 3DS Max and Vantage - you you can match the image.

You could also use the built in 3DSmax managed setup in color management, which will handle highlights more pleasantly than a naive gamma workflow or unmanaged setup.

I’m not sure which version of ACES Vantage is using for the AMPAS tonemapper in the “tonemapper” section of Vantage, I assume 1.0 , so that 3DS max setting should match providing no other post processing in vantage is applied.

Or you could apply the same OCIO file and use that rather than the one under “color” corrections.

That should at least let you see a pleasing none-blown out image prior to the vantage specific post processing settings such as bloom

It looks like you need to set “current camera resolution” from the resolution mode dropdown (screenshot in post #7). I thought this option is forced when running viewport live link (from Max), but maybe it isn’t and we need to look into that.

Just sent the scene, but honestly its happening on every scene except a brand new fresh one which immediately stops working as soon as I add a camera or merge in geometry from other scenes. Submission ID# 13GZ-RRG6

Are you using a safe frame with aspect ratio very different from the viewport aspect ratio? This could potentially cause the resolution issue, I was told (some 3dsmax quirk).

no safe frames at all. I still haven’t heard back about the test scene either…

How did you submit your scene? I don’t recognize the number you posted. Our support tickets IDs are just 6 digits.
