I have been wondering a few things on image size. I understand the principles of resolution and on how to make an image fit a 24" x 36" poster board. But it is when people start asking for 150 or 300dpi images is when I get confused. If someone was asking for a image that was 36” x 24” and they wanted it rendered out at 300dpi how would that compute into max terms?

36"x300dpi=10,800 pixels
                       X
24"x300dpi=7200 pixels

Yes, well that’s the math of it.

Understand though, when someone asks you for an imae of a specific resolution (dpi), that is usually a tip-off that they don’t know what they are talking about. :wink:

Pixel dimensions are all that is important. Dimensions are absolute. dpi is just a way to compare actual size to printed size.

Yeah these guys have no idea what they are talking about. I sent them final images at 3600 x 2700 for a 12" x 9" folder. Which is 300dpi! they are claming they need them 4 times as bigger…

I guess I just had most of my rendering sizes stuck in my head at 300dpi already.. I guess I just forgot the basic math behind it all :frowning:

thats only partly true, alot of the time I get people asking for an A4 or 32inch wide image at 300dpi.. These people know what they are taking about but wouldnt have a clue about pixel dimentions.

i suppose…3d guys work in pixels…2d print guys work in inches (or cm)

anyway, when I need to work out dpi/pixel dimentions, I just make a new doc in photoshop, type in the info, and it will tell you what the pixel dimentions are.

I’m just speaking from experience, and from seeing similar posts on this and other forums. Sure, there are print companies, magazines, etc. that know what they are asking for, but for the most part it’s a red flag. Just do a search for “300dpi” and “billboard” and you’ll see what I mean. :wink:

Use the print size wizard in max to calculate the correct output size :wink:

Also just open a new empy file in PS.
Image size - Set the desired dpi , then the size, and watch up how the pixels change. That I used before MAX get that in their interface.
