Importing texture maps correctly (normals) with TGS Texture Manager...

Hi Forum and Happy Friday!

Got a question on normal map importing. I use The Great Summit’s texture manager which is amazing btw. I am however not a 100% sure it is importing the normal map correctly? I have attached screen grabs of the material settings. Love to hear if it is right or wrong? Looks a bit suspect to me…

I feel like this is how I’ve always done it - like in some tutorial from Corona years ago I was told to turn on Flip Y, so I always have. I have noticed in recent versions the preview goes blue and it always makes me question if I am doing it right.

Maybe someone from Chaos can chime in and let us know if this is still true.

Make sure the normal is set to raw in the colour profile tab. (The preview thumbnail on your screen looks a bit off).

The ‘flip Y’ this is because some normal maps are made in DirectX and some in OpenGL. (its just a different way of treating things - a bit like roughness vs glossiness). I think Corona prefers DirectX. But most textures I use from sources like Poliigon are openGL and require the ‘Y flip’.

May need some trial and error I’m afraid

Usually teal color of normal map shader indicates that the texture is gamma corrected and its green channel is wrongly oriented, which is bad. You want normal texture to be loaded without gamma correction and its green (Y) channel to be oriented in a way that the texture was authored for - Y for OpenGL and -Y for DirectX.

edit: davetwo beat me. I just offer small correction - Corona does not prefer DirectX or OpenGL, the Y checkbox must be set in accordance to which texture you have.

There is also 2 warnings in your ‘Normal’ node:
NOTE: This shader is supposed to be inserted under bump channel of Corona material
NOTE: Texture loaded as normal shader MUST be loaded with linear color profile

I usually use the CoronaNormal instead of the built-in but not sure if that actually works and can be ignored, or something the developer needs to update for the Corona Engine portion of things.

Hi All,

Thank you so much for clarification on this :-). I set the colour correction to RAW and seems to work much better now.

RAW does help a lot - just did some testing - thanks for all the info everyone!
