This used to be on the old forum, I’ll post it again:
Follow these steps to configure distributed rendering with VRay:
1. Install VRay on all the render slaves you want to use (as pointed out in the install.txt file). This also includes the client machine, if you want to use that for DR rendering as well.
2. On each render slave, run DRWizard40.exe (for 3dsmax 4.x) or DRWizard50.exe (for 3dsmax 5.x). The wizard will ask a few questions. You must determine if you want VRaySpawner to run as a service, or as a normal program. Here is a brief explanation of the two modes:
In service mode, you can control the spawner through Control panel → Administrative tools → Services. You can also configure the spawner to run automatically when Windows boots.
In normal mode you have to start the spawner manually - either by executing the VRaySpawner40.exe/VRaySpawner50.exe file or by creating a shortcut on the desktop which you can double-click. In this mode the spawner will put an icon in the taskbar tray. Use this icon or the Task Manager to stop the spawner and close the render slave.
You must select the mode which you prefer.
The wizard will also ask about a temporary directory (this will be used to transfer the .max scene), the 3dsmax/AutodeskVIZ folder, and the folder where VRaySpawner is located (normally this is the root Max/VIZ folder). The wizard will then create an .ini file to be used by the spawner.
using vray 1.09.02u adv with max5.0 for DR. the frame buffer shows all the buckets for a while and turns black suddenly. the dirstibuted rendering dialog shows “finished rendering” in the status. DR is running as standalone application (not as service). ANY IDEA what is wrong and why it is not doing DR?
i really dont mean to add my post here but i have to point out this was a nice sticky post stuck here in the TIPS section. its strange to see bug reports on this one.
Gee, Ok..
the sooner the better.
I´m rendering here an 9500 pixels by 3000, With Reflection and refraction.
I had initially thought to use a little bit of Gloss, but I really gave up the idea.
AA settings are -3 to 1
Gloss 1.0 samples 2 (old setting for gloss 0,98)
its taking long to render. and worst of it is. .. sometimes the render shuts down ! and I lose the whole thing !! “unexpected error” its says.
When using DR and two computers, is there a way to use the host machine as a renderslave? The reason why I ask is it doesnt seem much sense to you DR on two machines.
ok. im not sure about what your asking since your english isnt too good there but with the old DR you can setup a machine to just be the host for the scene without rendering simply by not turning on the vrayspawner on that machine. as for processors. it doesnt matter how many you have. the limit with DR is on how many systems you have. the limit on one liscence is 10 computers. if somehow you have 100 processors in each computer (yeah right. i wish) then you will have 1000 processors on your farm hehe.
Wow, slaming my english…not good since it is my native language. - LOL

I have two machines. I want to use both machines to render an image. I was able to render a scene using DR on my second machine (renderslave) but my host machine would not render a bucket. I then ran VRSpawner on my host and got a licensing error.
That is why I am asking if its possible to use the host and a renderslave to render a single image.
Thanks,

ps. what is a “liscence”; do you mean license? - j/k - had to throw it back at ya - LOL
