To all those software/hardware gurus out there, which processor performs better in studio max, Intel P4 with Hyperthreading or AMD Athlon 64?

At the same price point or same mghz or the fastest available?

I guess the amd64 is a slightly better value, that’s what I bought for my second computer but for my workstations I go for the xeons.

thanks eric, how about AMD Athlon 64 3000+ going head to head with Intel P4 3.0 GHz HT? talking about render performance or the overall performance, which is much better?
Are the people in discreet working on a 64-bit version of studio max?

There is no more discreet :cry: But hopefully autodesk is working on a 64bit version. I probably wouldn’t buy anything that didn’t support 64 but I think it’s sometime into next year(optimisticly) and the release of longhorn till there is much use for it.

Thanks again eric. I need your conclusion/recommendation on this. I’m currently running on P4 2.8 HT, 1G RAM; should I uprade to AMD 64 3000 or not? or should we rather call it downgrade?

Hmmm, that’s a tuff one. I would probably wait till you can make a bigger step in performance. Maybe another gig of ram instead?

thanks for the link…I can’t run the speed test file coz I don’t have VRay 1.46, I only got 1.09…any chance you can share?

is there a free version of vray 1.46?

There is a demo version avaliable if thats what you are asking. Anything past that and you’ll have to save your pennies and buy a licence of v-ray.
