interior GI settings for fly throughanimation

Hi,

I’m doing a fly through animation & my first test flickers alot. Im using IM/LC as my primary & secondary methods.

Is there a “best” setup for this kind of work?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,
Animation (prepass) for IM and Fly-Through for LC is the answer. You can save it and then when rendering it will merge then avoiding any flickering. I did that on a previous project and it work like a charm.

Yannick

cool. thanks for the tips.

what kind of values are you finding good in the sub D slot?

Chris

We had end up using BF and LC for our last project. But perhaps you have more luck like Yannick.

Chris,
which sub D slot are you talking about?

like light cache subD at 500 & IM subD’s at 50 for example

Last time I used it I left everything by default for LC and subd 60 and interp. smaples 30 for IM

Animation visible there:

How does pre-pass work? . Do I need to do a batch of the whole animation with it set to pre-pass? & does the pre-pass method work with distributes rendering ?

And then change pre-pass to animation & specify the file? is that correct?

Chris

pre-pass is going to save the IM and LC as files (one per frame). Then when rendering the final version, it will merge then depending on the setting but it can merge the 2 previous frames and 2 next frames with the one getting render. By merging then it smooth it, removing any flickering.
It work with DR as long as your IM and LC files are accessible by the slaves.

cool. thanks for the help Yannick

out of interest what were the render times on that animation? at what res?

It was about 20-30 min per frame (Full HD) for the final render + 10-15 min for the prepass.

So is the pre-pass method better/newer than the Multiframe incremental method used in the fly-through tutorial for max vray?

not 100% sure but I would say so.

do windows require any special setting or work-flow. the method you suggested (Yannick) seems to be working except for around a window frame which still seems to flicker. Hard to tell properly as only 15 frames are done, but that’s what I can tell so far.

Cheers

Chris

there is a parameter to fix window spilling. Can’t remenber which one (anyone knows?) that might fix your problem.

try with enabling “Check sample visibility” option of the Irr map. Also set “Secondary rays bias” value to 0.01 in case you have some overlapping faces there.

all the tips for the moving camera worked great , thanks.
Im trying to apply the same method to a different interior shot that has a static camera but moving objects, but it seems to be still produce some artifacts on some larger moving objects. Is this method still the best way for static cam & moving objects?

Thanks

Chris

Light Cache retrace? I think it is a new parameter in the nightlies.
