I modeled this iPod from scratch over the course of two days- based on small photos I found on the web. Little did I know is that someone was selling a lightwave version for $20 on Turbosquid which would have made my life alot easier. But I still don’t think his version is as accurate- and besides he used lightwave. I’ve got some more overall stuff to do- think this image will eventually tell a story. Now that I look at it- perhaps the headphone cords are a little on the short side. Critiques and comments are appreciated.
The model looks great. Maybe it’s just me, but the perspective looks slightly “off.” As if you rendered from an Isometric User view or something . . . not sure.

Just for clarification, I did not model the wheelchair or IV stand as I was running out of serious patience. They were obtained from the free section of 3d Cafe which I found rather suprising- you don’t often get nice models completely for free. I did on the other hand texture these particular models as the defaults materials were unsuitable for vray.
If you got a keen eye and have read through other posts- you’ll notice I used Metroberlin’s brown leather material for the wheelchair. Thank you again Metro- this was excellent! The chrome on these two items are the same- high reflectivity vraymats with low subdivisions to speed up rendering time. This also had the effect of giving the ‘metal’ a more blurred effect- I consider it a happy accident.
The plastic baggy and tube has an IOR of 1.55 - polysterene. with a diffuse and slight greenish refraction. The tube showed up a warning of ‘too many transparent levels’ in the render but I let it finish anyways. This is just a basic spline with a compound loft set to high skinning in order to get rid of a polygonal look.
As for my lighting, I had only used a spherical .hdr with it turned off in the Max environment. It took many tries and many different .hdrs in order to get the white of the iPod to look white. I had serious problems trying to get it to be predominantly this color. I ended up finding a suitable hdr after many many hours of screwing around then throwing a vray wrapper around the default max white material- increasing the recieve GI value.
My render settings are pretty consistent with what I normally use. They are AA filter set to Sharp Quadratic. Default Simple Two-Level AA. Refract, Reflect, and Caustics on. (GI) Irradiance Map set to 0/2 min/max rate. Distributed Rendering was turned off cause it wasn’t seeing all my maps and my brain was hurting. If any of you know of any faster ways to get this type of result- please share it with me.
It took over 4 hours to render out a 1280x960. I think this was largely due to the plastic bag and tube refraction. If I had to do it again I’d get rid of the refraction on the tube and use some other light green mat. The system specs I use is:
2600 Athlon XP 333FSB
1 Gig DDR 400
SOYO Dragon Ultra Black Edition (I could use some more ram slots…)
Geforce TI 4600 (I’m not sure if this really makes a difference in render times- just viewport refresh???)
