I don’t have very good budget. Please feel free to let me know if any better & cost effective configuration then this..
My field of work is mostly architectural visualization & as of now i don’t use progressive rendering or Vray RT much
my knowledge about networking & hardware is very limited.. sorry if this is a stupid question to ask here.
Looks solid to me. I think 8x8GB of ram is overkill. I’d start with 32GB and see if you ever had scene come close to using that much.
Thank you so much! I was thinking of starting with 16GB.. thankfully ram is something which can be upgraded later. I am confused whether to start with i7 series or this xeon. I have never used xeon & currently i am using i7 3930 as my main comp.. I am pretty happy with this aswell. Just thinking of adding 2 more rendering node and may be few other later is all goes well
What is your budget? Getting these older chips is not a bad idea, however, I guess it makes me a bit nervous because you said your not very tech saavy - you would be putting this together and troubleshooting by yourself, and some of those older chips may arrive DOA (or worse: dying). Just something to keep in mind.

my budget is $750 to $1000. i am thinking of buying these from amazon & will take help of a local computer shop guy to assemble it.
I wouldnt save on ram tbh if you expect to do big or detailed projects. Depending on the amount of slots and base modules (8 or 16gb) upgrading can become quiet expensive. I have similar nodes but upgrading the ram from 64 to 128gb will be about 500euro. For my i7 workstation uograding from 4x8 to 4x16gb will cost 700euros. The last few projects have been pushing the limit of my 32gb ws.
As for the nodes, they run quiet hot 70-80degrees so something to keep in mind. Also worth looking for a company that sells refurbished ones. Thats what I did, ended up cheaper and with 2 years guarentee.

If not I have some tips. This is a nice mainboard if you can find it: ASUS Z9PA-D8C, and it is atx format + no need for an extra graphics card.
You can find this ram: 8x 8GB 64GB Hynix DDR3 on ebay for around 200?. It is compatible to that mainboard although it is declared as apple ram.

whats the price of that? i think you could get a single i9 7900x or a threadripper 1950x and it would match the speed and even be cheaper and less electricity.
edit: looking at the corona and vray benchmark i’m right. save yourself some money and go for a 7900x or 1950x
I would go with Threadripper 1950x. It is faster than i9 7900x judging by the Vray and Corona benchmarks and it’s the same price.
entire setup costing $5550 , only processor ( single) is $1300.. it is 20 core! ( 10 core each) you suggesting single i9 better thn this?
I just checked AMD RYZEN THREADRIPPER 1950X 16 CORE 4GHz TR4 180W Processor.. slightly more expensive but looks much better!
i am confused.. My purpose of this build is to use it on network as rendering node only. Is this single desktop processor i.e AMD RYZEN THREADRIPPER (16 core, 4 Ghz) better then Dual Xeon E5-2660 v3 @ 2.60GHz (20 cores)? Cost wise AMD RYZEN THREADRIPPER is $1400 whereas dual Xeon E5 2660 v3 @ 2.60GHz costing around $2615.. If i go for 2 AMD machines.. will that be more value for money?
A single threadripper 1950x is faster than dual E5 2660 v3.
I saw from your website that your based in India. I used pcpartpicker to create this list. it’s only an example so get a second opinion. in dollars it’s a bit under $4000. (you also need a cheap or 2nd hand graphics card as the motherboard has no onboard graphics).

I just calculate the total ghz to cost of total system. 16core x 4ghz is 64ghz. 20core x 2.6ghz is 52ghz.
