Issue with Chaos Cosmos material and the Asset Browser

Hi,

I have an issue with Chaos Cosmos materials and C4D’s asset browser. I’m trying to have all my materials in the asset browser, but there seems to be issues whenever I try to link materials from Cosmos into the Asset Browser (.tx files). Sometimes they display properly, for the next second not rendering at all, this includes the object it is applied to which sometimes just displays the default grey material. It can happen when I just stop and reload the IPR. Any ideas what is happening?

Preview in the asset browser looks fine, but the preview displays as black when I’ve loaded the material into C4D. This only happens for Cosmos materials.

Are they not compatible?

Hi @markus_hll The Cosmos Assets are indeed compatible with Cinema 4D.

Please share with me the exact V-Ray, Cinema and Cosmos versions that you are using.

Also, please screen-record the whole situation and share it with me so I can observe it.

In addition, when you navigate to “Materials”, how many materials do you see (check the counter at the top)

Thanks for the quick replies!

@viktor_angelov Latest VRay, Cinema4D 2025.2.1, latest Cosmos. Tried replicating the issue with a simple box and a clay material (and other cosmos materials in the asset browser), but just having the material not displaying - other materials not from cosmos displays fine. How would I go about sharing a video screen record? I’ve attached a screen grab with the clay material applied but not visible on the cube.

@hristo_chakarov In the cosmos browser or asset browser? Cosmos Browser says 4957 assets in the material tab.

Managed to replicate the issue of the geometry disappearing, happens more frequently with highly reflective materials. Downloaded a galvanized metal texture, loaded it into the asset browser and applied it to the object resulting in the object not appearing in the frame buffer. Works great directly imported from the Cosmos browser though.

Hi @markus_hll
These are node materials, right? We already have a related issue that has to do with the way we handle all Asset Browser textures in our node materials not just materials from Cosmos. If that’s the case then unfortunately at the moment it’s entirely possible for textures to disappear and be rendered as black.

Hi @bozhidar_ivanov

Yes, all node materials. I see, no workaround? I’ve only had the issue with Cosmos materials.

Thanks for the replies!

Well, you could disable node material previews from Preferences and you should be able to at least use them in interactive for the most part, but I would not call that a workaround. We are already looking into possible solutions for the problem.
