Hey
the higher the resolution is, the longer I have to wait until I can use Max again. Set resolution to 12.000x8.000, render, hit cancel after a few seconds. The status window displays “done”, but I have to wait around 25 seconds before I can do anything. What is V-Ray doing in this time? Can this be fixed?
It takes 2-3 sec. in my test here to release the memory for such render resolution.
Maybe you have Auto save from the VFB History Settings activated ?
Okay, here is the screencast. I have to wait nearly a minute before I am able to use Max again.
Memory usage goes up to around 40gb in this case, not that much.
Autosave for the history is turned off, just checked it. Also, no lens effects or anything, because they crash at the resolution. See here: Lens Effects: Crash to desktop on high res images - Issues - Chaos Forum
Thanks for attaching this video.
The best way to continue troubleshooting this is to send us that scene to support@chaosgroup.con and see if we can reproduce the same behavior here. Probably we don’t need all the geometry inside ?
And what is the the V-Ray version installed because I can see it from the screen recording ?
Installed version is 3.50.04
I will send the whole scene as is.
File is prepared. Can I send it to you, Tashko?
Great.
Please send the link to support@chaosgroup.com and give me the ticket number you will receive from our ticketing.
Hey,
ticket number is #765745.
Regards and thanks in advance
Oliver
Tashko found the solution: I have to disable the get resolution from Max checkbox for the VFB, set the correct resolution in the frame buffer tab for V-Ray, and then set the resolution of the Max frame buffer to something very small.
That way the delay is very short.
Thanks again for the help!
Thanks for posting back here, this is good to know.
Best regards,
Vlado
Is this something that can be automated for ease of use? Some kind of conversion in the background to the V-Ray framebuffer?
Maybe for large resolutions we can show a dialog box to ask the user if V-Ray should automatically turn off the “Get resolution from Max” option and set the Max resolution to lower dimensions?
Best regards,
Vlado
I didn’t realise this was still required. I recall doing it many years ago, but not in the last 5 or so I’d say.
This might be a good idea. I think this should be done on resolutions of 6K and above. When the user accepts it, the resolution is transferred to the V-Ray frame buffer dialog, and the Max frame buffer set to something really low. On a render 6000x4000px to 60x40, or 1/100.
I recall doing this ten years ago at Macke. But this was for memory saving, when RAM was not as cheap as now. Because the lower Max frame buffer resolution is saving memory, if I remember correctly.
Didn’t knew about this issue.
Getting resolution from Max is useful (little presets buttons, etc.) but maybe you can make a factor 10x/100x in advanced setting for VFB
Then if you put 60 pixels in MAX resolution, it’s converted to 6000 in VFB.
Or override Max resolution by a factor of /100 only during rendertime ?
