i need to create a lamp shade based on this spec sheet:
i haven’t played around too much with the translucent settings with the vray mat. can anyone lead me in the right direction as to how i would set up the shade material?
thanks in advance.

Perhaps this is the mother of all hacks but pre VRay I used a radial gradient for diffuse and self illum, looks like if you add a bit-o-noise to that it would get you close.
After my recent full on battle with making an ice cube I am in no hurry to play with translucence.
Hope that helps.
here’s what i got so far:
the material uses a noise map in the refract channel. that’s about as far as i have gotten for now.

Looks good!
perhaps a little more burned and warm color

for some of my Lamp shades, I’ve got a seperate light that includes the lamp shade only, helps with tweaking the look wothout affecting the overall scene. ![]()
my shot at it. not as good as yours proces2, but decent i suppose. tell me what you think. ![]()
that’s quite nice. can you share the material and light settings? yours is a bit more softer than mine. i am actually creating a very similar light to that. the only difference is that the shade has a jagged, thin horizontal pattern. if i get a chance i post the image.
here’s the rendering for the other lamp shade:
Just looks great! ![]()

@proces2…
looks amazing!!!
can you please upload the scene??
the ZIP file has the material and bitmap that goes with it.

i just dropped a photomteric free point light inside the shade with the intensity set pretty low.

many thanks ![]()
mmm, very different approach from how i did mine. completely different, but it works very nicely, but to point out, that if your shade is very short, like the way mine is, then the pattern does not show whatsoever. but it is still very very nice. ![]()
do you still want me to put up my mat file proces2 or should i concede defeat? ![]()
yeah, i would like to see the mat, especially if you created it differently.
