Liquid Simulator Only Creates a Brick

Aloha, The Liquid Sim used to work but now only makes a brick (in the container). It used to work and I have other files that have been created that worked properly, but now all I get is a brick. Mahalo for any help! Aloha

Hey,

Could you give us some more information - what is your exact Phoenix version? Also, if you could attach the Phoenix log file, it will be very useful for us - you could find it in C:\ChaosPhoenix

A simplified scene where the problem reproduces or video/screenshot showing the problem on your side will be very helpful too

Thanks!

Aloha Slavina, Upon returning to 3ds Max, I have tried to get the latest product and plug-ins that I think I need. Phoenix 5.23.00, Build ID: 20241113. V-Ray 7. 3ds Max 27.00 As far as I can tell. Mahalo for any help you can provide! Aloha

Hello, could you please describe the result more clearly? The statement “The simulation creates only a brick” doesn’t offer any insight into how your setup is configured or what the issue might be. If possible, please include a screenshot of the viewport, a rendered image, and/or the simulation settings. Thank you.

Aloha zdravko, Mahalo for the response! As I have persevered through the tutorials; understanding the new Max is getting more clear. At the point I submitted this “brick” question, any wave simulation I tried suddenly had this brick in it, sometimes without particle support. Finally, I have developed enough background that I am actually getting a wave simulation that will likely be useful. But attached is a screen grab of the brick which hopefully is no longer a problem. My question now is what is it and where did it come from? It just popped in as I was creating a container and I could not remove it. Mahalo again for the help! BTW, the tutorial that was involved is the 4 year old Nightly regarding Wave Force. With a little more patience, everything seems to be working swimmingly! Aloha

Hey,

This looks like a second Phoenix Simulator. Check in the Scene Explorer if there are two Simulators. Is it possible that you created the second one by accident?

Do you have any other scenes where the second Simulator appeared suddenly or is it only in this particular scene?

Thanks!

Aloha Slavina, Yes, the blue wave is the first simulation and the objective of the exercise. I have no idea where the second one, the brick, came from. The Scene Explorer lists the Liquid001 and the Wave Force, but the Max file only lists Liquid001. Interesting though that the Max file that is working also only lists only the Liquid001 simulation. However, both of the Max files have the Wave Force icons displayed but unnoted and the first one also has the brick. Mahalo for the help! I am really happy I finally got the waves (actually swells) created with the Wave Force and that they are manipulable. There are very specific 16 foot swells I want to create and another set in another file that are 30 foot swells. If you know what you are doing, they are a lot of fun! Mahalo again! Aloha

Hey,

Could you send us the scenes where the problem is visible, so we could check what is happening?

You could attach them here or send them through the Support Portal - https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Thanks!

Aloha Slavina, One problem solved! My Wave Force Helper was not displaying because I did not have the helper display enabled. My new and more careful following of the 4 year old “Phoenix FD 4.30.01 Nightly - Massive Wave Force” tutorial (YouTube) is reaping dividends as I apply it to my needs. Attached is the Scene (Max file) for the scene the screen grab in fifth Post above. Oops! Chaos says I cannot upload files ending in M a x. Going to your “support” link. This file was an independent follow of the tutorial mentioned and was going real well until the brick was thrown into the works. I finally got so desperate that I copied my direct follow of the tutorial and modified it to fit my needs - well, so much for that idea! Mahalo for the help! Aloha

Aloha Slavina, Unfortunately, the link does not accept non image files and the limit is 2 MB. Any ideas? Aloha

Hey,

Try this one - https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Aloha Slavina, Unfortunately, again the link does not accept non image files and the limit is 2 MB. Any other ideas? Aloha

Hey,

My colleague Tashko will contact you through the Support Portal and help you attach the scene

Aloha Slavina, Tashko tried but unfortunately, again, the .max file is being prevented from being uploaded. Mahalo for trying. Aloha

Hey,

Thanks for the scene! Opening it on our machines, there is no second Simulator and everything looks fine.

Hello Kenneth,
I’m also looking at your scene now and can’t find any errors, bugs, or anything that looks like what you were describing. I’m not exactly sure what your goal is and what you are trying to achieve, but let me point out a few things that might be relevant.

Inside the Rendering Rollout, the “Pure Ocean” option is enabled. This option prevents any simulation data (cache files) from being displayed. You will only see a simple (pure) flat ocean surface being generated.

Here’s a snippet from the Phoenix documentation explaining this feature:

Pure Ocean | pureocean – Creates a flat ocean surface up to the Ocean Level height. It does not need loaded caches and if there are any, it ignores their content, so no simulation details will show. Thus changing frames and generating the ocean surface is very quick. This allows you to preview the behavior of the Phoenix FD Ocean Texture when Displacement is enabled or if you want to set up your texture for the Wave force. The option is available for both preview and rendering in Ocean Mesh or Cap Mesh modes. During preview, it requires the Show Mesh option to be enabled in the Preview rollout.

Then, you have an Ocean texture set as a displacement map. This offsets (displaces) the flat (pure) ocean surface. In this case, you don’t need the Wave Force. It will be ignored entirely.

In case you do want to run a simulation and see the result, you need to disable the Pure Ocean option and leave the Wave Force with the Ocean texture plugged into it. In this case it might be better if you remove the Ocean texture from the displacement slot or use another instance of it with more details and a smaller scale. The displacement is not part of the simulation, so you can do this after the simulation has finished.

In other words:
1. To run a simulation and see the results, disable the Pure Ocean.
2. Leve the Ocean map into the wave force. It will push the liquid particles and generate a wave pattern.
3. After the simulation, you can refine the look with another Ocean map as a surface displacement and add small ripples if you decide that you need to do that.

I hope that this is helpful.
Cheers,
Zdravko

Aloha Slavina, Mahalo for the help! Any idea what that odd ball “brick” is in the fifth post (5)? It sure was a pain for a couple days - especially when I am just learning the new 3ds Max! It is still there as an artifact when you hover over the Sim and I cannot select it. Fortunately, the phantom brick has not shown up in any of my other scenes. I will save that scene for posterity! Mahalo again for the help. Aloha

Or, perhaps you do want to use the Pure Ocean and have a quick, instant wave pattern representing those 16-foot swells?
In this case, you don’t really need the wave force. You can delete it, and nothing will change.
In the file you sent, the swells are created by the displacement, not by the wave force.

Aloha Zdravko, Mahalo for the help! I will try to apply your comments and citations. One thing I have learned with this new 3ds Max and plug-ins is that they are very time consuming when rendering, and I thought the earlier versions were time consuming, so your effort is greatly appreciated. Fortunately computer speeds have sky-rocketed. I have a number of modeled and animated innovations and inventions (all ocean related) that I have worked on since Autodesk’s 3D Studio days. It was easy to see that as proofs, they needed to be updated and that is what I am doing now in my old age. I am really happy with the quantum leap in realism we can see in the new versions. This is and is going to be a lot of fun! Mahalo again for the help! Aloha
