Little discussion on the Brazil forum.

I recently rendered a scene (several hundred thousand unique polys) competing against a Vray user, rendering the same scene, who boasted Vray’s speed and quality over Brazil. Not only did my Brazil render look far better as stated by third parties, I rendered it in 4.5 minutes, compared to his 11.5 in Vray. And yes, Zeboxx is right--photons will speed things up.

and there was a competition between brazil, fr, and vray month ago on the finalrender forum.

brazil was the slowest (3 times slower then vray) and doesn´t look better.
so what does it proof?

if you have enough time to tweak the photon map brazil can be fast.
but when you keep in mind the average time you need to find the right photon mapping parameters for brazil you will be much faster with vray and it´s easy to setup irradiance mapping.

i really like the irradiance mapping from vray because its so easy to setup and it looks good out of the box.

photon maps on the other side are much more difficult to setup (at least for me ).

but i challenge you!

try to render this scene with brazil and please post your settings and system specs.
i had no success coming close to vrays rendertime for the same quality.
and this is a simple GI example.

it´s this scene if you don´t remember:

as result on my posting i got these replys:

oh look, its a scene with 1 light and no textures. just like i make everyday in feature film production. i’m so excited.

I’m currently out from the hotel and will be off to dinner soon, but for what it’s worth.. yes, it took about a minute, and rendered in 8 minutes on my laptop (yes, that’s single CPU).

To be honest, I’m not sure what bores me more..
These challenges, or those who insist that they are valid quantifiers for a renderer’s capabilities.

These ‘challenges’ show little to nothing about the renderer at worst, and a bit about the artist’s abilities at best.

You say that you are having problems with photons, and can get things setup in V-Ray, and then challenge others to do this in Brazil r/s. That doesn’t sound to me like any request for assistance to learn. If anything, it is a troll post. Your last reply, specifically, is entirely a troll post*
Normally I follow the advise “Don’t feed the trolls”, but at some point I think I should make it clear to users that this is the SplutterFish forum for SplutterFish products (and legacy unofficial support for blurbeta plugins) and their users.
When a user asks for comments and critiques on an image, it is expected that the help is in the form of advise other than “Get a different renderer!”. If a user appears to be posting such replies consistently, without particularly contributing, eventually one of the admins may restrict their access. This is not censorship, we’re all for open discussion about renderers. But inflammatory and troll posts are not part of this open discussion.

I’d type more on this, but we’re off to dinner.

I’ll finish with saying that this particular ‘challenge’ is pointless in showing users what a renderer is really capable of, workflow, etc.
I do know that if anybody is serious about this challenge, one of the first things they’ll notice are :
1. The files uses all specific materials, even though a Standard material should suffice. I’ll assume this is from an old version of the renderer, but if not.. ouch.
2. The scene itself, though nice, has several meshing errors. It’s difficult to work with in any renderer.
3. There’s an irradiance map error in the top-left.
4. There’s anti-aliasing issues on the bars beside the door on the right.

I’ll let other users have their say on the above points - All I will say is that each renderer has its perks, and I’ll leave it up to the end-user to decide which renderer they would like to use on their own experiences.

Your post qualifies for points 2, 5, 7 and 9

i ask you, why you only get such answers at the brazil and fR forums?
why is it that vray user seem to be more interested to get the best out of the renderer and try achieve good results and don´t fear the competition?

if i had asked this question here im sure someone would have posted scene settings that show me how to get a better rendertime.
instead of calling me a troll.

possibly its your wording that set them off. by use of the word challenge. You might have gotten a better responce by simply saying “i havent been able to get the same performance out of brazil as i have been getting from vray. Could someone possibly help me with my brazil settings.”

what wording you mean?

as you sure noticed, english is not my motherlanguage and i translate word by word.

Then dont be surprised if your wording might be found imflammatory by some.

i thought intelligent people will notice this immediately.

anyway seeing that mrproof (to whom i replyed) speaking from a competition where brazil wins, i thought the word challenge will not create such big waves.

Its just that its been done again and again and again. Theres nothing new to add, except more flames.

percy

It’s the same with everything. There are, unfortunantly, many people who will get one product and automatically block out the competition. This is a prime example. Also take the nVidia - ATI debate. It’s quite embarrasing at how possesive people get.

These one minded individuals have no skills outside of their chosen app which is a bit of bad luck when job hunting.

Keep an open mind and ignore the ignorant. Use which ever app you are most comfortable with, just don’t totally ignore the competition.

Well said Matt.

my 5 cents:

i don´t know how they behave when you are a splutterfish customer.
but to me the splutterfish guys always seem to be a bunch of arrogant peeps.

If vray cusomer would be different, then such reply wouldn’t be possible!

Such discussions are annoying.

to be honest i wouldnt go into any forum offering a challenge of any sort because it will get this sort of reaction.

At the end of the day vray users think vray is best, Brazil users think brazil is best and so on.

they are all good, some better at doing stuff than others and Visa versa.

i also think speed nearly always depends on the user and his or her’s knowledge of the product

well thats my 5 pence worth.

well for me it sounds like he asked the fishes to help him getting the most out of brazil.

the answers he got are no help at all.

Who needs Brazil R/S?
No DR, no nice displacement, expensive, slow.

I fully agree with Natty.
in the end everyone chooses what it best fits their work…after all is still one cg community..just different tools to achieve/strive for the same result…

Ask yourself the same question, and then change Brazil R/S with renderman. Each renderer has its moment to shine, and brazil surely has its also.

no question.
but how that fits into the context of the replys janus got at the SF forum?

The two main characters that I have met and spoken with, and drunk with, Scott and Steve, are realy nice guys. One thing that Steve always tells me, is that he has great respect for the Vray guys, and wishes that Vlado and him could work together at some point. Vlado and Peter are equaly really nice guys. I can’t wait to see them at Siggraph. The impact of their work is starting to stretch way beyond the 1 and 2 man architectural rendering shops, so they are starting to get really busy business wise. I am sure that both places are starting to feel some serious growing pains.

Sorry to say so, but when i read some of their comments i have to agree with long john.

I couldn’t disagree more with the fellow who said the splutter fish guys are arrogant. Anyone who has meet them knows they are great guys and if you look back at the raytracer in max and all the free Blur plug-ins and shaders, almost none of that would have existed for free without Scott and Steve.
Vlado and Peter are another fine example of this with VRAY free and Simcloth being given away freely.

I prefer Vray to Brazil because I find the GI faster, but Brazil does create some beautiful images too.
I think you’ll find that brazil is more focused on the FX market and if you look at the Vray Images section on this forum you will find that Vray seems to be focused on Arch viz, though I have used it for Medical and Games as well and we have all seen the great work Red Rover and DD are doign in TV and Film.

You can compare features all day long, but in the end Vray and brazil are very different and very the same…so it’s a waste of time talking about it when you could be out actually making money with one of the other or making art you enjoy…

At the end of the day you use what ever makes you money…

Is this a discussion on the creators of Brazil or the people on the splutterfish forum in general? Seems some might be confused (including me).
