Live Link resets and freezes during animation render (V-Ray Update 3 + Vantage 3.2)

Hi Vantage Support Team,

I am experiencing an issue where the Live Link connection resets and completely freezes when attempting to render an animation.

Here are my system and software details:

  • Host Application: 3ds Max 2023
  • V-Ray Version: Update 3 (Issue present) / Update 2 (Working normally)
  • Chaos Vantage Version: 3.2

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Start a Live Link session between 3ds Max and Vantage 3.2 using V-Ray Update 3.
  2. Click the Render Animation button directly within 3ds Max.

Observed Behavior:

  • Immediately after starting the render, the entire Live Link connection resets, and the scene reloads anew in Vantage.
  • If I click “Start” in Vantage after the scene has reloaded, the software completely freezes.

Troubleshooting & Workaround:

If I roll back my V-Ray installation to Update 2 and perform the exact same steps, the issue does not occur, and the animation renders perfectly. Additional Notes / Port Discrepancy:

I noticed a difference in how the ports are connecting between the two V-Ray versions, which might be related to the bug:

  • On V-Ray Update 2, Live Link connects successfully via port 20701.
  • On V-Ray Update 3, port 20701 no longer works, and it automatically connects via port 20703 instead.

Could you please look into this? Let me know if you need any log files or a sample scene to help test this.

Hello,

I can’t replicate the same issue here using the steps provided and vray_73002_max2023_dr2_x64.exe / 3dsMax 2023. It seems to be working fine on my end.
Is it scene specific ? Do you have a maxstart.max file in 2023?

Can you start a ticket for this problem : http://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Please install the 7.3002 again and make a new render animation test. Then send us the Vantage log file ( located in %AppData%\Chaos\Vantage.) and a screenshot of the 3dsMax Maxscript listener if any errors appear.
A video showing the issue will be also helpful.

The port has changed because new V-Ray builds use a new DR (distributed rendering) protocol, version 2. 20701 is for DR1 and 20703 for DR2. So it looks like the correct port is being used (otherwise live link would fail to even start), but there are other issues related to the new protocol.

Do you happen to have Cryptomatte in the scene?
