I must have used VRayBump2Normal in every project I worked on back when I was using Max full time and now I’m starting to miss it for quick LookDev setups. Is there any chance there is a way I can access this great tool from Max in Maya using Vray 2.45?
Is there a specific reason why you need it? Our bump mapping algorithm in Maya does pretty much the same thing by default.
Best regards,
Vlado
Oh cool that’s great to know ![]()
So do you recommend using bump over normal maps in Maya?
Thanks,

Normal maps are somewhat faster to calculate (just one texture read), as the normal value is directly taken from the texture instead of being computed from height values. However this advantage goes away if you derive them from height maps on the fly anyways.
In terms of visual effect, they both produce similar results.

Hi Vlado
I am trying to reproduce this great scratch metal shader tutorial in Maya using normal map :
http://viscorbel.com/microscratches-swirl-marks-spiderwebbing-vray-tutorial/
but I dont find a way of controlling the strength on the normal map in Maya like the author describes in 3d max, am I missing something ?
Thanks.
Alex
bump that i was looking at exactly the same tutorial yesterday also and got stuck at the same point
cheers

Haven’t tried, but the Bump Multiply parameter should do the job.
the bump mutliplier is greyed out when i choose normal map in tangent space on the vray mtl
Hi,
Which V-Ray version you are using ?
I’ve checked and it seems implemented for 2.x nighties and the current beta.
hi,
im using the latest official, ill have a play with the nightly, i seem to have come across another issue now anyway will post soon
cheers

So here is render following the tutorial from the Alex’s link, as you can see the scratches do not radiate from the reflection/light source but appear to be pinched. I have made a simple scene on the right of the image to illustrate the effect. Surely that cant be right or am i missing something, thanks in advance
