I have just made the transition from VrayFree to VrayAdvanced and I have a first question: How do I adjust the settings in Advanced so that it gives me the same results I was getting with VrayFree on my existing Max scenes? I know VrayAdvanced has it’s own materials/lights/etc., but I don’t want to make any changes to my scenes yet. I just want to set up Advanced so it will mimic the settings/output of VrayFree.
The scene is very simple: Ground Plane, Skydome, and 3 low-poly trees. One direct light plus Vray sky. The render settings are at VrayFree defaults and I checked use GI. The shadows are simple shadow maps – no ray tracing. The materials are standard with an alpha channel for the opacity. As you can see it looks nice from VrayFree, but when I render the same scene with VrayAdvanced it has 3 problems: The contrast is blown-out, It’s has a color shift, and the alpha transparency is not working correctly.
I have made no changes in the VrayAdvanced Settings, and it appears to have tried to copy the settings from Free: for example the skylight is the same color that I picked in Free, but the end result is still different. As I said I don’t want to change the scene itself, I just want to setup VrayAdvanced to render it the same way that VrayFree does. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I am totally new to VrayAdvanced so I may be overlooking something obvious.
The problem is also that many things have changed between version 1.09.03 and 1.47, so simply opening an old scene and hit render will not work, you have to change some settings.
There are lots of threads about this already, you’ll find lots of usefull info in there.
I went through all 82 posts that came up when searching for Free and Advanced, but all I could find to try was: set the QMC GI subdivisions from 50 to 8 – I did this but it made no difference. I also rendered with every different type of Color Mapping, but that did not work either.
I understand that VrayFree and VrayAdvanced are two different programs, I understand that Advanced is not as quick/easy to use as Free, but they are made by the same company and they both ship with default settings. Is there someone who is familiar with both programs who understands why:
VrayFree with default settings handles this simple scene fine.
VrayAdvanced with default settings causes three specific problems:
1)Alpha opacity not working
2)Color Shift
3)Blown out contrast
I’m using standard materials, but I think I found my main problem:
VrayAdvanced did not like the “Direct light†in my Max scene. I deleted this light, then re-created it in the exact same position with the exact same parameters and most of the problem was solved: The opacity worked, and the render out-put was a lot closer to what I was getting from Free. Now I think it’s just a matter of tweaking settings. I will post something as soon as I can get a good render or run out of ideas.
