mass .mat to .vismat converter? 3ds can't work

so i have a problem on my computer that whenever i try to install any version of 3ds (even the demo from autodesk) i get an error and cannot open the program. therefore, it is impossible for me to convert .mat files to .vismat files without reformatting my computer (i don’t see any other way to install 3ds).

so, i ask, is it possible for there to be an automatic converter from .mat to .vismat that wouldn’t require you to open up 3ds? just curious if something like this could exist…

Unfortunately, the .mat format is a bit closed off from what we’ve seen. Granted, we haven’t spent a ton of time trying to convert raw .mat files, the plugin for Max seemed to do a good enough job for converting basic materials. If anyone knows any resources about .mat files, that would help us develop a tool like the one you’ve described, by all means let us know. We’d be more than happy to convert the thousands of .mat V-Ray materials over to .vismat.

Here’s a little bit of glimps on the .Max format in general…it pertains to .mat files as well, since if follows the same mantra 3dsMax…basically Autodesk doesn’t want to release the details for us to read the format

unless they seamlessly combine autocad + 3ds/maya (i.e. RHINO!!! <3 so much) i will eternally have a chip on my shoulder towards them

not 100% sure what that means but i am 100% sure that autodesk is working on a competitor/killer to rhino.

i really hope it doesnt dominate rhino as it happens so often (intel vs. amd is my prime example on this), because i REALLY love rhino. it just has methods that autocad COULD have, but straight up doesnt because of how long autocad has been around and how much of a standard it is. rhino is simply more intuitive and works much more fluidly
