Material Editor - Brightness Control

Is there a way in the next update that the Brightness control is fixed.

Currently, the way it works is you can really only darken, and if you invert the image you can only brighten. In theory, this seems like it’s doing all the right things. However, this is only valued with a bitmap that is in the 50% grey tones. If a map is beyond or below 50% grey the spectrum of values is clamped.

See example:

The bitmap is probably 80% black and you need to pull it down to 60%. This is not possible without the use of a 3rd party application. Currently, you only have the ability to lower the brightness, increasing the black values. If the bitmap is inverted making it from 80% black now to 20% white there’s no way to darken the values as decreasing the brightness makes the bitmap brighter.

Two proposals.

  1. Increase the spectrum value for the brightness control. Allow users to increase brightness by having the slider in a midpoint with a value of 0. Move the slider in a negative direction darkens, positive direction brightness. Still allow for the invert but don’t invert the control.

  2. Flip-flop the brightness control for inverted images.

Dev team - very interested in your thoughts.

@jtubb , just to make sure I’m fully understanding your request - I suppose you actually wish for functionality like “curves” in photoshop? You may know already what I’m referring to, otherwise, feel free to check out this article here as well. If this isn’t what you mean, let me know!

Not necessarily referring to the use of curves. The thought is to expand on the functionality within Enscape and minimize the need for 3rd party plugins.

See concept mock-up. It’s very straightforward and currently, the functionality doesn’t exist but the framework is there and needs to be expanded.

@jtubb The invert function might still be necessary. I remember in the past some texture website or program was assigning “inverted” bump maps that people needed to re-invert to show up correctly. But in essence your idea needs to be implemented asap.

Agreed, the invert option should continue to be in place.

@jtubb , perfectly clear now, I appreciate the further input. I have more than gladly forwarded this to our developers for review and additionally, you can be assured that it’ll also be a feature request which product management will see and discuss in further detail. As always, thanks a lot.

I understand that darkening feature was made because Materials in ENS tend to look much brighter than texture image is. I never needed to brighten Albedo.. But quite few times I was in need of brightening something with Roughness..

Thank you for the upvote!

Thank you both.

Its been more than a few years since this was originally posted. Any chance we can get this feature? Would be great to brighten a image in the materials editor. Darkening is handy. Would be greay if we could brighten images as well. THanks!

Would be great to have this feature to both lighten and darken maps, it would allow for more flexibility when fine-tuning textures.

This has been requested many times, even from when the material editor was still in beta. It’s been ‘accepted’ on the Enscape Ideas portal but seems like the devs forgot about it again :frowning:

While we’re on the topic of texture sliders: I would also love a desaturation slider

Thank you everyone for your feedback as always.

Our product management team would like to discuss this internally once more so it would be great if you could also forward your wishes detailed via our official Chaos Escape Ideas Portal as detailed here. That is in case you haven’t already of course (like @Pieter_2 ), so thank you to anyone else who has done so previously.
