adam
uhm.. click the material selection button and select VRayMtl
Go into the materials editor settings and in renderer check the current box…
ah, so that’s what the question was ![]()
cheers chaps
I just ran into a strange problem. I’m in Max, all materials are showing in the editor. I drag a material over to another slot & it turns totally black. I check to make sure my renderer is set to vray and it is. Then i try switching it back to scanline to see what happens. They all turn black. OK, so i switch it back to vray and now they are all still black.
If i make a standard material and switch the renderer to scanline, it will show up, but no matter what I do, my vray materials will not appear.
has anybody had this happen before?
timmatron,
I am fighting with the exact same problem right now. It is VERY frustrating. The only way I can get the materials to show up again is to open a new scene and then merge in the old scene. VERY ANNOYING!! I have to do this at least 6-7 times a day!
I wonder if it has anything to do with the update bitmap code from Vray. I did install that at the same time I installed vray…I might try and revert to the old one to see if this problem goes away.
Any help would be appreciated.
Donald, try this. For any material that doesn’t show up, click on the button that changes the sample type, i.e. sphere, cylinder, box. Then change it to something different, like cylinder, and see if that clears it up. Then you can switch it back to sphere like normal and it should work just fine. For some reason that worked for me a while ago and I haven’t run into the problem since.
Timmatron,
I will give that a try…I am under a huge crunch right now and I just rebuilt the entire file from scratch and it has reoccured yet. But I will go back into that file and try that later on today.
Thanks for the tip.

i seem to remember that i had this problem and it boiled down to the little tick box in the global settings for the reflect refract… i turn it on and my materials appered ??
this might be your problem might not ![]()
This is the fix for you..
You have to set in the material option v-ray as the render for it as well, currently your materials are shown in scanline. The button for that is once you opened up your material editor(press “m”) to your right. It looks like a window with a ball infront of it, once pressed a window pops up, select Current instead of Scanline under Renderer.
Have fun
Ralf
net_ralf,
I already know about the current render option. What I am seeing is a little different. Totally black slot! Not just a black object. I am still looking into the other suggestions to see if I can track this lil’ bugger down!

what vray version are you running ?
have you checked the global setting ??
I am using the latest Vray Advanced 1.09.03m
I have tried changing the material slot model from sphere → cylinder → square…with no luck.
Natty: I am unsure as to where to find the global setting for reflect refract. Where abouts should I be looking for this setting. Render Dialogue or Max Preferences :?:
Just a stab in the dark here, but do you not maybe have the Manual Update option set in the Material Editor?
Okay…I should have just done this about 10 posts ago, so that everyone can see what is happening. I was just being lazy. My apologies.
You can see my mat editor and my mat editor settings. I hope this helps.

This may be completely off-base. It could just be the DARKUI which you are using. Try switiching back to the default UI. Weird things like that happened to me when I used that interface in conjunction with some other plugins. Tkaes two seconds to switch and test- see if that helps.
have you tried switching your graphics driver for max try standard
I had the exact same problem as pictured above. I guess I never really found the cause or the real solution. It was just something that I thought I fixed by changing the sample type - it worked for me but obviously is not the solution for everyone.
