Material ID without DOF effect

Hi,

big problem - the material ID channel is without DOF effect and so the masks can be used. I hope it can be fixed.

This does not work. Once the materialId’s are blurred, you can not select them via color range anymore. At least, if you have multiple materials close to each other which is the case where MaterialId colors become useful. How do you intend to use DOF with materialIds?

For example at Vray it works. I need it to select objects and fine adjust or change colors/materials.

It works quite good if you use for example the Photoshop tool selection → color range and you play with the sensitivity range. This tool gives you a soft faded selection - see second screenshot. Best you use the shift+pipette and click on the mix color range. After some little adjustment you get a selection of the soft areas too. Maybe not 100% perfect, but most it’s quite useful. Third screenshot show the selected red part. Without DOF the selection would be totaly useless.

Also the z-depth should show the same DOF like the beauty pass.

Agree… without DOF, the Material ID pass is useless for shots with dof. With DOF, it may not be perfect, but is useable in many situations. Thanks for pointing this out and making this very clear Micha!

(Workaround for now… render without dof and fake it with depth pass after post processing. )
