Hi,
here are the problems with this specific file:
- when I rename these 2 materials, they are not just renamed, they are renamed AND duplicated.
- when I click on “Purge Unused Assests”, these 2 materials are purged while they are assigned to objects.

I am not able to reproduce the described behavior. Could you please share with us the file or a part of it, which exhibits the issue? You can pack the scene (Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project) and send the archive through the support portal - https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.
