Recently Ive been having issues with crashes. I can start a render and max will crash straight out with no error. I can reach the end of a render and do a manual save from the vray VFB and max will crash.
I have 24gb or ram and these scenes are pretty small. Nothing unusual going on in the scenes..
If the cpu was overheating wouldn’t the entire system crash..not just max to desktop. Anyway, the cpu is not overheating because I have cpuz monitoring and it is always below 60degs. I’ll check the memory for errors…been having strange resets of my system at random times. Would you recommend a memory testing programme ?
i get this too on various machines…
suddenly max and VFB starts to blink, first VFB then max and so on…
onl yway to solve is close the app down with task manager
Well. Last night I adjusted my memory voltage and a few other things on the bios and (touch wood) things seem ok now. My memory voltage was too high so Im guessing that may have been the main problem. Can’t be sure until I test over more time.
happens mostly when regiion rendering and DR
if i exit the VFB and then stop the rendering its ok, but if i do it the other way round, its crashes and flashes
When it crashes, do you get either the 3ds Max error reporting dialog or the Windows one? They both write dump files with information about the crash, which may be useful.

Same for me in the latest project i’m working on.
If i cancel a render it freezes, on render end it freezes. (i’m using DR)
I do get a windows dialog saying the program isn’t working anymore (so i suppose i could send a windows dumpfile?)
i first thought it was a combination of multiscatter and using xref’s. It solved the problem after deleting the xrefs.
But now it freezes again.. i will try merging it to a new file and see what happen.
i ve reinstalled the comp completely i havent got the bug yet…will see
might be connected to a specific windows update pack!!!
the dump file might help but i was not able to get one as that itself crashed as well!!!
thanks john!
will have to have a look into that
it might be that the mobo is faulty also…at least i have the same specs just behind me so i will be able to find out if its mems or mobo.
And it’s great you’ve got something to compare with. Makes troubleshooting easier for sure!
If you have several suspect components then another thing you might want to look into is your power supply. That is, if you haven’t already of course In the 24 years I have been doing ICT management I have had scores of seemingly random problems caused by a faulty power supply. Nowadays, I usually start my troubleshooting right there, simply by swapping it with another comparable one. Then progress to memory/graphics card/processor/cooling, in that order.
Anyway, I do hope you get it sorted and that it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to replace parts!
