Max 6 question... Off topic

Just got Max 6 installed on my machine and I can’t get the tab pannel to display in the UI… maybe I am just being thick but the Y key doesn’t do anything and right clicking on a free grey area at the top of the screen doesn’t give me the tab option either

Any ideas?

mmmmmm… nor me i think they may of disabled it … GREAT something that you use every day that take away in there infinate wisdom..
i hape im wrong, but i dont think i am.

It should still be there, its on the quick reference card that comes with Max 6

Looks like its time to make a custom pannel with all the tools, modifiers and scripts that I frequently use

just found this…

Retired Features
The tab panels are no longer part of the 3ds max user interface. This was done so controls would take up less desktop “real estate,” and to improve the performance of 3ds max window refreshes.

If you load user interface layout files (CUI files) from previous versions of 3ds max that include tab panels, the tab panels will display. In addition, all button images from tab panels are still available, and can be used on custom toolbars.

Duno about you but my customised tab pannels dont load when I try and import my max 5 UI… this sucks

no they wont …
i wish they would give us the F** in… option to have them or not to have them

Look under the “\3dsmax6\UI\LegacyUIs” where you installed max and try either the max5 or 4 UI’s. Think I heard that you had to use the 4.x UI.

uhmmm …doesnt work for me ..

Haven’t tried it in 6, but we had the same problem going from 4 to 5, you can with a little patience hack you UI by cutting and pasting from the old to the new…

I think there is a discussion on this in the discreet max6 board

On a not so related note.. Can you delete a tab from your max 5 panel? Ended up going in manually into the cui to do it since the option appears to have quite dissappeared..

im glad they are gone i never used them.

so what if u never use them. u had the option to turn them off before… still sucks for other people.

If you did use them and want them back posting a msg on the discreet forum will get you faster results than complaining about it here.

I remember they made the tab panels worse going from 4.2 to 5.0 as well, something about moving/changing tabs was made harder.

Maybe this has something to do with Adobe and Macromedia’s little UI courtroom war that’s been going on for a while?

yeah, discreet doesn’t wanna get sued and become intangled in that “ui war”…hehehehe

paul.

Actually, when the update from max 5 to 5.1 came out, they had removed the possibility of adding tabs. The most insulting part was that any post concerning this on the forum would be deleted imediatly. Even I, tried to ask about it and got my post deleted right away.

I’ve heard people mention that the “ui war” was the real reason this was removed. And discreet just hoped people would’nt realise it back then. (hence deleting post to cover it up).

Now all of a sudden, they have a reason for it, a speed issue… Funny that they didnt think of just saying that before

But after testing max 6 with and without tabs I’m pretty sure the “official” reason they give is just a lame excuse. Heck, if it was real, we could still have them and just choose to use them over speed.

What sucks is that tabs have been in use for the longuest time, so it would have been just good business to license the use of them from Adobe so to not cripple Max… But I guess the all mighty dollar is more important than their client :frowning:

they say they want to add space for speed performance but instead add a reacor tab? wtf…

you guys really use tabs that much? I’ve never used them - I always preferred the command panel docked on the left. wierd

nope…dual monitors and all the shit off to the right :stuck_out_tongue: but then I dont know what half of it does either
