i believe someone from our florida office said if you do a network install of max 2009, this service pack will cause issues.

A viewport performance issue related to the ViewCube has been resolved.
Apparently, installing SP1 will switch any Network Licensed install of 2009 to a stand alone and give you the 30 trial period in which to activate. Looks like a registry hack will fix it…
I had a similar warning pop up, after that I discovered that max 2009 and max design have two different SP1 
dowloaded the right one and everything works fine
I just got a message from mu reseller that there are apparently some issues with the Service Packs. They adviced to not install them yet, in case you haven’t done so…
I looked for a different one. Did I blindly miss the link to the Design SP1?

yes thank you zeronove. I did go and find it after you mentioned it. One would think that there would be a warning or a link to the design version…
The screwy thing is that the Hotfixes installed with no problems… I hope that doesn’t mess anything up.
One of the issues is while working with light instances, you can’t use the light lister anymore.
