So, I got this build a couple of months ago and I’ve noticed that memory is running on 2666 Mhz. Manufacturer tested speed is 3200. I’ve overclocked through BIOS profile, according to necessary voltage and timings, but I get BSODs on long heavy usage… I am sure I am doing something wrong, but I am not really into overclocking, so I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
Btw, the Cinebench comparison is 2625 on 2666 Mhz and 3091 with 3200 Mhz. Totally worth it… Any help will be much appreciated!
What you need to do to OC your RAM to 3200, is enable XMP profile for your RAM.
Change the AI overclock tuner to D.O.C.P and below it you will see the pre-configured profile for your RAM @ 3200 MHz, you don’t need to play with any voltages for this to work.
And by the way, without OC your RAM will run at 2133 MHz ,so you probably had some kind of OC before for the RAM to run at 2666
You might want to restore optimized defaults before doing this, to make sure everything else is as it should.
Save changes and reboot now, and do stress testing for 4 hours or so.. This should work without issues.. I used this same CPU, RAM and Mobo in many builds here and the xmp profile works just fine without any additional tweaks
if you still get crashes, check for a new bios update for your Mobo.. Then check if Microsoft deployed an update recently that messed up the RAM OC on this Mobo, use Google
If you already have the most up to date bios, and there is nothing about an update that caused an issue, you might have to manually OC your RAM and use slightly higher voltages
Tthe speed boost from RAM OC is normal for Ryzen. This is how its architecture works, unlike Intel where high frequency RAM is totally useless for 3D rendering. It is essential to buy high frequency RAM for Ryzen and I found the Tridentz from Gskill to be the best for Ryzen
If RAM OC is stable, you can even OC your CPU to 3.9 GHz or so, to get a score of 3300+ in Cinebench.. So 20% more speed out of CPU and memory OC which is really nice
Another note for Cinebench, you have to run it 3 times to get the correct score.. Usually the first 2 runs give you slightly lower scores.
Thanks a lot for your detailed response!
You are totally right, it was running 2133 stock and I actually used DOCP tuning profile, which gave me those nasty bsod.
Good idea about bios update, will check it out.
I’ve tried to use DOCP again and running now memtest86 going already for 3 hours no errors so far.
There is a lot of voltage options there… Can you please give me a hint what voltage option I should adjust if nothing will help?
No need to change voltages if everything is stable with your current DOCP
There are usually mulitple DOCP profiles, you should choose one with 3200 MHz or screenshot what you have here.
If you still get crashes, I will tell you how to OC your RAM manually with slightly higher voltages
Thanks for your help. I’ve updated bios and it’s stable for now. Will see during a heavy rendering.
I started with 3.6 Ghz CPU overclock, let’s see how it will behave.
Do you know what is the difference between DOCP and DOCP Standard profiles? Both are 3200 mhz, same voltages and timings. I’m using DOCP for now.
Cool!
They are the same I think.. Usually you only need to choose DOCP for your AI tuner and it will automatically pick a correct profile for you.
For CPU OC, you will be fine with 3.8 GHz.. Set the CPU core ratio to 38 and CPU core voltage to 1.35 >> these numbers will work without issues
Your Temps should be under 70 degrees C with your cooler during full load and your CB score will be around 3200 or so
Don’t use the built in bios OC tool, or the Asus Suite Auto OC features. And don’t leave CPU core voltage to Auto, as it tends to use way more voltage than when you set it manually and hence higher temps
Also 3D rendering is very good at picking any RAM issues, even better than stress testing apps like Prime95 or Aida64
It is normal if you get a crash on Vray even if you stress tested your system for hours without any crashes.
If it is all stable so far, you can go with even higher CPU OC until you reach the limit of what your chip is capable of and I can help you with this, but if you are happy with 3.8 GHz it should be ok.
Let me know how it goes!
Thanks for the hint. From your experience, can I adjust CPU Voltage from Asus AI Suite, or it is better to do that from bios?
Rendered a couple of things and looks like everything is stable for now! Though I am on 3600 Mhz for CPU now.
The Asus AI Suite has not been 100% reliable in my testings so far.. I did build a few machines using this board and the Zenith Extreme.
I don’t recommend doing any OC using the AI suite really. Doing this manually through bios is simple enough and more reliable.
Make sure you reset everything in the Asus suite app to defaults and use bios with the numbers I mentioned above
Set the CPU core ratio to 38 and CPU core voltage to 1.35
These numbers should work without issues if your temps are all good.
Also there is an Auto OC features in the bios using some kind of tools that you find in the AI suite app. Ignore these too, doing OC manually is always the best.
Hi Muhammed, thanks for the advice. I’ve set everything up in Bios and looks like it is working properly!
The only small annoying thing I have now is temperature changes. My PC is idle, CPU usage is jumping from 1-3% but temperatures from 53-64, and that makes my CPU cooling to change the speed every minute, making changing noise. I think this may be something like auto-tune setting? Like it gives the boost to CPU on its usage and forcing it getting hotter which forces my CPU fan to work on higher speed?
Thanks!
usually when idling, you get constant temps..unless there is a problem
Did you uninstall the aiSuite app?
Uninstalling it used to cause the fans to act something like what you described, but there are other reasons for this behavior
64 is kind of high for idling.. under full load what kind of temps you get?
Is your room temp over 30 degrees?
there is a tool called intel power gadget.. can you install it and open , then run cinebench then screenshot here how the graphs look.
Also, you can easily setup a fan curve, to make it only kick in under full load.. but first we should figure out the weird behavior
Did you build this PC yourself? Did you apply proper thermal paste and positive airflow in your case?
Nope, aiSuite is there. I’ve reset bios to defaults and overclocked memory again - now it is more or less stable. That started to happen when i’ve tried to set voltage for CPU manually from Bios (now it is by default)
Yes, I’ve built PC by myself and applied a custom thermopaste, which is not cheap and not very expensive, but I think should do it’s job…
I’ve installed power gadget, but for some reason, it is not starting.
I am using HWInfo and right now when idle I am getting 49 - 56C. And it is also jumping. Fan rate is from 50 to 70% (depending on the temperature, i have that graph on)
My room is under 30 degrees and there is good airflow in the case.
Also now under the full load I am getting around 65C, which is ok, I believe?
But again, that is without any CPU OC - it is 3.4, but jumping sometimes to 3.7
Weird thing is that it is always constantly jumping from 3.6 to 3.7 - I believe that is normal behaviour?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Here is a test i’ve done:
As you can see the idling spikes I have. And on the load the CPU speed dropped to 3.0 ghz. with voltage 0.9, while on idle it is 3.7 and 1.3 voltage. Do you think I can set that up through AMD Ryzen software to be constant 3.7 ?
but I think should do it’s job
It is not required to use expensive thermal paste, even some of them require advanced application techniques..
what matters is how you applied thermal paste. Too much thermal paste will cause issues, but it is not really hard to do, so if you think you did a good job, no problem
but for some reason, it is not starting.
This means it is not a hardware problem. You aiSuite or some Asus app is causing this behavior most likely
I am using HWInfo and right now when idle I am getting 49 - 56C
Good idle temps. But problem is that is not consistent. It jumps around without a reason. Can you check if somthing runs at background causing CPU usage at idle?
Also now under the full load I am getting around 65C, which is ok, I believe?
Good temps.. no worries at all
I believe that is normal behaviour?
It is normal if it jumps to 3.7 even on idle.. what is not normal is fans kicking on idle
That started to happen when i’ve tried to set voltage for CPU manually from Bios
by default, Core voltage will go way above 1.35v.. so there is no problem if you use manual Core voltage
As you can see the idling spikes I have
There is something in the background causing this idle spikes.. If not Ryzen master app and Asus apps has gone crazy
And on the load the CPU speed dropped to 3.0 ghz
This is normal. with all cores in use, any CPU don’t run at max frequency(unless it is overclocked)
Usually it reaches turbo frequency with one or 2 core under load.
with voltage 0.9, while on idle it is 3.7 and 1.3 voltage
this is not supposed t happen
Do you think I can set that up through AMD Ryzen software to be constant 3.7
I don’t recommend using it.. it is reliable to do this through bios
what you should do now is set everything in bios to defaults. Then uninstall ai suite and its components
Remove any apps that control fan speed or access CPU voltages
Restart then install only ryzen master and ai suite and see if things are back to normal
That is why usually I don’t do Memory OC or CPU OC through software, things can go crazy. Best thing is to do this through bios
Let me know how it goes
Hi Muhammed,
So here are graphs on bios defaults and with uninstalled AI suite and AMD Ryzen utility: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/dti6mxhribozzmp/shot\_181015\_102133.png
Still, there are spikes, and CPU utilization is not going higher than 1%. I see that voltage is kicking in making CPU go up to 4.0, looks like turbo boost and it makes my fan spin faster when temperatures rise.
Fans are still kicking in, without AI suite looks like it is working constantly on about 60% (judging by the noise), going up to 70% when the temperature rises.
About thermopaste application - I’ve followed some instructions on how to apply it and applied via pattern, which looks like a spider web - covering all areas of the CPU, I don’t think I’ve applied too much, or not enough.
All DRR4 is 2133 and will run this way out of the box. DO NOT use XMP profiles with AMD. It is very frustrating. It took me 2 days to figure this out before I could get the Ryzen stable at 4+ ghz. For whatever reason, the actual timings that work at OC are different than the XMP profile or what is printed on the sticks.
Sorry for taking that long to get back to you. The board I worked on had the same fans issue, I did a windows reset and everything worked nicely then
It is 100% software.. I would recommend not touching any oc settings or fan controls inside windows. You better do this from bios
Also you should install AIsuite and all its components if you haven’t already.
Let me know if you need help!
Well, not sure what to say. I am really kind of new in the world of OC, so that’s why i used the profile.
I’ve checked all the timings and voltages for RAM and they looked exactly how they are shown on the manufacturers website. And that is the only thing what XMP did change.
Thanks for the tool, that looks quite cool - but to be honest - for now, I have totally no idea how to use that !!

Thanks for getting back and no worries at all! Thanks for the info. I will try to delete all the software related to OC and CPU control and will check everything again.
Yes, I have AI Suite and all components installed, the only thing i’ve changed there is fan speed graph.
Let me check everything again, will run all the tests in different situations and will come back with more info.
Thanks !
Ok, so i’ve resolved all my issues by changing my cooling system.
What i had was Enermax TR4 360. And the first batch had a lot of problems, and the worst was that liquid with time became same kind of jello. You can see it here: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/909855-enermax-tr4-360mm-aio-high-tempsproblem/
So, yesterday I woke up with CPU speed 0.5 and temperature about 70. And found out that pump is not working at all. Tried to change connectors and ets, and then i stumbled on that forum.
Immediately I ordered another cooling system (deepcool Castle 240RGB TR4), and you know what? CPU OCed at 3.7 GHZ and has 58C when rendering. RAM OC’ed to 3200. Unbelievable, my Enermax with 3 coolers did not give such temperature in the beginning, and it did cost me about $40 more… And cooler spinning rates are stable on this one.
I’ve seen there is second generation of Enermax TR4, but I lost my confidence in those guys…
Yup, Enermax messed up big time with their first generation coolers unfortunately. Every single one of them died on me during the last 30 to 40 days
I replaced like 15 of these so far, and like you did I will not give them a second chance.
They are still the only ones who cover the entire socket, and out of box their performance has been really good, but it seems like something was wrong with their pump.
Many people even refused to do liquid cooling for their builds, which is fine. But usually an AIO should last over 3 years, not 6 or 7 months
