Modelling Advise

Good afternoon.
I have a large fully landscape model to place in to a terrain.

I normally spends days moving everything down to the terrain level.

There has to be a more sane way of producing this model.
There are numerous elements in the model to be integrated, roads railways, cycle paths ect.

Help and advise would be appreciated.

Phil

I think you’d need to be more precise in explaining exactly what you need to do, if possible.
I’m not sure, for example, what you mean in the second sentence.

Give us the info and maybe there’s a stress-free method, though I suspect that if it’s a complex scene then it may not be…though we can hope!

There is the drop script. ForestPack Pro is the best way to manage landscape.

Hey Philip - I feel you’re pain there. Both RailClone and ForestPack have options to conform to surfaces. The itoosoft Glue plugin provides the ability to both drop objects down onto a surface and conform splines to a surface. In some cases the old 3DS Max Shapemerge can be used.

Thank you for the advise.
Yes, I have the Glue free plugin from Itoos, it works well. Get Free Plugin GlueUtility for 3ds Max, conform spline to a surface.

But parts are flat ,for examples roads and rail lines, and paths are conformed.
So I think it is a mix of the plugin and hand modelling so to speak.
I can not put up an image as it is confidential.
But thank you .
Even after all these years of 3D work sometimes you have to just put the work in.

Thank you again.

Phil

There is a spline plugin out there that I know some people use for things like this, but it was too rich for my blood so I don’t have it.

You probably mean Splineland: https://icube3d.com/splineland.html but that’s not maintained anymore I suppose, last version is for 2024, I still have a license somewhere, but only used it once a couple of years ago. I remember not having too good results with it (I also didn’t know what I was doing back then).

What I do now is use splines, put a subdivide (adaptive mode) on top then use a combination of relax, tyselect, push and tyconform modifiers to get what I need. Non destructive and parametric workflow.

Besides that there’s also TerrainAxe: https://www.flyingcfx.com/ which I would probably buy if I had to do big things.

Good to know.

I don’t know if you’ve experienced this - you can spend heaps of time modelling paths/roads/kerbing (following the terrain), only to find all the work put in is hardly noticeable in the final viewpoints. If possible, I try to remodel/simplify the terrain to be as flat as possible in as many areas as I can get away with, to make life easier. Probably a good idea to set up all the trees area early on. With any luck they hide the time consuming bits

There was another plugin called TerrainAxe which was designed with flat roads and stuff in mind. I never tried and I don’t know anyone who has.

Couldn’t agree more with this, took me a long time to learn this lesson
