Hi guys. I wanted this image to depict the warmth and love between my girlfriend and her daughter.

Nice work, but I agree about the spiderweb, kinda takes away from the love, also I would move the lamp to the back and bring the mother and daughter to the foreground to give them more importance in the composition

The spiders web was supposed to be a symbolism of age and life..meaning that no mater how old or what happens in life, the love will still be strong.
The light had to be positioned in front to create the correct lighting on the figures. They would be too silhoutted otherwise, and I did only want the main lamp to be (pretty much) the only source of light for this image.
looks great, nice warm feeling, too.
Only thing I would call a crit, is the light fixture itself…seems like this type of fixture would not be indoors and it seems like a tiny fixture for a high pressure sodium bulb (HPS need room for a decent sized ballast somewhere.) If it’s not supposed to be an HPS, sorry for the comments!
But, that’s not really important, and it’s a great looking bulb!

The light fitting exists already. We have it in our bedroom (alhough, it is much cleaner than the one in this image). It normally has a lamp shade on it, but I didnt include that as I liked the detail on the bulb etc. Maybe the lack of lamp shade is giving that impression.

I think the symbolism would be stronger if the web were going to the mother. Almost like she is being pulled into old age! I love the concept…and the render. Maybe try a finer, more intricate web as well.
I think it might be best to just remove the web… If i attached it to the mother, it would either have to be on the other side of the image or I would have to spin the figures round 180…i’ll give it a go and see what happens…i like the idea of her being pulled into old age…cool one
Here is a different try. I included the window with the rain on the glass to try and contrast with the closeness and warmth of the ornaments.

Both images look great. And while the second image is quite powerful, I prefer the first.
Being a formalist, I’m don’t think the spiderweb conveyed what you intended, but it certainly helped balance the composition, and acted as a counterpoint to keep the eye from focusing solely on the figures. And while the window is nice, and emphasizes the DOF, when it was wallpaper, it helped tie the background together.
I understand the idea of getting the figures to the left of centre, and having a large negative space on the right, but I think cropping the right side so that the figures become right of centre might be a stronger option compositionally.
Either way, it looks excellent, and is a great exercise. Preparing something for Valentine’s Day?
I kind of responded to the original comments. The spider web for me was an added after thought, and didnt really add to the composition in my opinion. Also, i think if I had kept it there I would have liked it to be more dusty and cob web like which I couldnt achieve in the time I wanted to complete the project. Didnt really know any good methods for creating that type of effect.

That’s looking very nice.
One crit though, I’d move the window to the right some, windows are rarely pushed so close to a corner, as it is the window seems to stand on it’s own as opposed to being part of the wall.
I like the addition of the window. The cold wet night outside is a really good contrast to the warmth within… I agree with the window needing to be moved slightly though but I love the image.
Quite powerful. I have to agree with Clifton about the composition, but hey, really not much to crit. The details are amazing! This is a beautiful gift.

Thanks for the comments everyone, really appreciated. I intend doing a series of smaller images like these. I found doing the longer, complicated scenes took too long and I lost interest.
