Moving Asset Download Folder

Hi, the documentation for Cosmos says that the downloaded assets folder can be moved by copying the current content into the new location, but it recommends that the existing content be left in the original location due to “existing projects which reference the downloaded Cosmos Assets”.

Where exactly is this ‘reference’ between projects and the asset location?

To be more specific, I’m placing assets from the Enscape/Cosmos Asset Library into a Revit project. Regardless of whether I select the asset from the online models or the downloaded models, the resultant object inside the Revit file reports the EnscapeAssetID (e.g. 3482acb3-9d74-412a-b044-3558d9ee311d) and the EnscapeAssetSource as “REMOTE” (not LOCAL).

So I’m struggling to work out where this link between existing (Revit) project files and the downloaded assets folder is, or why I need to leave a copy of the downloaded assets in the original location?

Hello Grey,

1. Can you please send us the url where you are reading those instructions;
2. What’s your purpose for moving the downloaded files?

Hi hristo, sorry for the delayed reply. The articles were on the official documentation pages, I think it was likely these pages I was reading:

However, it says they were updated in the last 7 days and the wording around the moving/copying of downloaded assets seems to have been updated.

Having said that, I’m still a little confused because the documentation still says:

When changing the download directory for Cosmos Assets (see how here), the Cosmos Assets downloaded so far will not be transferred to the new directory automatically.

This is done to ensure that existing projects which reference the downloaded Cosmos Assets will not be broken as a result of changed file paths.

Does this apply to Revit/Enscape though? In Revit the only real interface I have access to is the “Asset Library” in the Enscape ribbon. Launching this then brings up a window titled “Enscape Asset Library”, but which in actual fact is the Chaos Cosmos library/UI (which is slightly confusing when trying to track down help articles and what not). From within this UI I can select a single ‘Assets Download Folder’, and my understanding is that when Enscape is launched, it will browse this folder to try and locate any of the asset guids (or whatever else it’s doing under the hood). I don’t understand any of the wording around existing projects, and broken references, and changed file paths, when talking about the Revit/Enscape environment? Doesn’t it simply just read the download folder and load what it can? Where are the broken file paths that the documentation mentions residing, and is there really no way to resolve them other than leaving existing content in place in the existing location?

In regards to moving downloaded files we’re having issues with IT security policies blocking the functionality of the asset browser (i.e. failing to load) on certain machines. We have a selection of assets that we like using in projects, and the hope was that we could simply copy these downloaded assets to a new shared location, and have offline users point their download location at that folder. (Or copy those files onto a local folder if needed.) Thereby ‘moving’ downloaded files to a new location in order to give offline users access to those assets. (Although this doesn’t seem to be behaving as expected - some users sometimes see the assets, sometimes they don’t. A separate issue perhaps.)

My ultimate goal is to have a selection of our revit families linked to enscape/cosmos assets, as well as custom assets, via the guid. In order to guarantee that the assets are always loaded for all users, I’m hoping to store the downloads data in the same location as the Revit library (whether this be served based or cloud based). I’m beginning to wonder if such a setup (multiple users all sharing a downloads folder) is possible though? Or what the recommended workflow would be if part of the team need to work offline for periods of time, yet still have assets available?

Hey Grey,

I’ll try to clear most of your confusions. See below:

Does this apply to Revit/Enscape though?

No. This applies to older V-Ray for X integrations that were hard-coding paths to assets in the scenes. For some time, Cosmos exposes an API that is path-agnostic.

Cosmos Browser is one for all – Enscape, V-Ray, Corona, Vantage, Envision, doesn’t matter. All assets are downloaded to the same directory. However, in Enscape you will see only Enscape assets; in other integrations, you won’t see Enscape assets, because they are incompatible.

From within this UI I can select a single ‘Assets Download Folder’, and my understanding is that when Enscape is launched, it will browse this folder to try and locate any of the asset guids (or whatever else it’s doing under the hood).

Correct.

Where are the broken file paths that the documentation mentions residing, and is there really no way to resolve them other than leaving existing content in place in the existing location?

See my first reply above.

If you want to change the downloaded assets location, the correct way for doing it is described on the page you mentioned.

The best setup would be to use a shared network drive. This way all users will be connected to the same assets.

Cool, thanks. We’re dealing with some network drive issues/migrations at the moment, but ultimately hope to have the shared network drive functioning as intended. I worry our network is serving files ’ on demand’ though, more akin to a cloud drive, and it seems like the load time is blowing out a bit because the network drive directory has to essentially be ‘downloaded’ again in full every time enscape is launched and it queries that location.

In any case, that’s on the IT team to resolve, in the mean time: presumably user A could simply copy paste their library folder to user B’s library folder, and both users would have access to the same assets? Is there any reason this might not be working for user B? There was a time that the assets loaded, but it seems like now they aren’t seeing anything, and the downloaded library says it’s 0mb in size, despite the location not having changed and the downloaded asset files remaining the same as when they were originally pasted in there?

Hello,

Our QA engineers tried to reproduce the problem, but they managed to copy assets from one user to another without issues. Just make sure to strictly follow the documentation, and to be logged in Cosmos Browser with our Chaos account. You must not delete/overwrite the destination’s Lock and Packages directories – you have to copy the files within the existing directories!

Hey @hristo_chakarov

I’m having a similar issue. We’re using Vray Cosmos for 3DS Max. We’re combining two libraries of downloaded Comos assets into a singular location for all to share on our team. I’ve ensured the assets were added to the correct download folder and that folder is set correctly as Cosmo’s download folder. But none of the copied over assets are showing up in the Cosmos’s library Viewer.

I’ve tried running the “Stop/Start Chaos Comsos” command, I’ve tried restarting 3DS Max and my pc. But none of those assets want to show up in the Cosmos browser. I searched for and redownloaded one of the copied assets that wasn’t showing up, and then it did, but I’d hate to have to do that for all 100+ assets we’ve already downloaded.

How can I get all the assets to show up?

Thanks!
