Network Path for new models

Hi

Just thought I would relay a nugget of info to anyone using purchased models from Turbo Squid or Evermotion etc… and rendering over a network.

When you get the models for the first time open them up and then go to File, Asset Tracker. For each texture path, right click and select Set Path. Then navigate to the location of this map on your server - you should end up with the path like this \\drivename etc…

If I had done this before I had started to include third party models into my scene - I would have saved possibly 3 to 4 weeks of rendering out flickering textures in an animation that some of the render nodes could not find.

That’s a good tip and i would add that using retarget common root is a big big time saver when it´s possible (and sometimes it is)

What is retarget common root ?

If you go into bitmap/photometric paths (under the utility panel when you click on “more”) you can copy bitmaps to a network location and also reassign paths.

Like everything else in Max, there’s 5 different ways to do this.

yeah the asset tracker in max is good, just bewarned if you have many maps in remote locations it can bog down

When the bitmaps share the same folder u can set this as the start directory under which all the images can be found. Then u can select all the missing maps at once and retarget them to the current location, and it´s done! It´s useful when u have 20 or 30 bitmaps from a model purchased online.

Magic - thats insane !!

Thanks guys
