New general topic

Hi all, here my wish:
A new general topic named: Compositing theory, or something else about the compositing.
I my opinion it’s an other chap than render theory and the rest of the topic, and It would be nice to have all the info in one topic.
All about matte, comp tips etc…
What do you think?

Agreed…would be very useful!

Good idea, I’d like to start learning more about comp’ing.

I would look into these… Nuke IMHO, will be the future since Apple stopped supporting Shake.

I don’t mean a topic to learn Shake, Nuke, Flame, combustion or an other software, but all things that will be related to Vray and comp.
Chris, everybody know that this is your job, well.
there are many questions which are posted again and again about the same things related to comping, this would be just to put them all in one topic.

Great idea priad. It’s a bit hard for us one man shops to get our heads wrapped around everything under a deadline.

I’m all up for writing a few bits on this since there’s a lot of other people that I know that want to learn comping - I’ll write a few bits on it to give everyone a broad base and then maybe some of the high end geezers like thorsten, chris and rob can add some pro level sparkle. I’m doing an all cg test car ad soon so I’d love their feedback and any post processing / comping tricks they’ve found made a difference over the years.

gr8 idea me thinks!

Excellent!

yeah really cool joconnell!!
Btw this doesn’t exit my wish eheh

That would be great!

I hate to state the obvious but you sorta need to learn to comp before you comp for Vray. It would be like saying. I want to learn to drive a bus. First learn to drive in general, then learn the bus.

Chris, those dvd’s look pretty application specific though, rather than ‘comping in general’.

i double that!
the most helpfull thing i ve found about comping ever, was ur thread in here cpnichols…
a few other on a specific forum section would be very-very helpfull!!

The theory of compositing works between any package either way, it’s just that each package has a slightly different work flow, may name things differently or present information in a different way. You can achieve the same things regardless of package though, just more easily in some packages than others.

There you go…that´s the standard to get into comping and theory…at least it WAS when i got into it. Anyways…sure there are some tricks and specialities here and there. But in general i am with Chris there…you need to learn the basics of comping. And comping is a field just as broad and complex as 3d itself. It wont be possible to write Tutorials beyond specific cases wich on the other hand would most likely have to be stripped down to some extend as we´re talking about internal and partially not meant for the public things. That´s not cause we hate you, but we have to feed mouths and there´s no way around that sadly i´n afraid.

But i DO like the idea of a comping related category and am sure willing to participate there

Regards,
Thorsten

Thanks Thorsten, if it’s good enough for you then it’s good enough for me!

We’re not trying to steal your secrects, honest… well not all of them

I think these topics get brought up enough to merit it’s own categorie, never hurts to add some organization in the name of usefulness. There are a lot of topics on comping scattered around would be good to put them all together.

Not sure why anyone would be against it…

People are getting more and more lighting savvy, and the demand for photorealism is very high. It is only natural the compositing become an issue. I think it is natural that people want to learn it, but may not realize how big a subject it is. I would encourage people to learn it. Instead of my bus analogy think of this way. Imagine a person that knows nothing about 3D at all, and they come to you and say they want to learn Vray. You would tell them that they need to learn the basics of 3D first right?

I’m not sure if compositing is anywhere near as large an area as vray seeing as most of the people on this forum will be dealing with post processing and integration more than anything else - it’s more a case of dealing with the vray render passes and learning how to see a picture for the purpose of comping into it imo. You’re right if someone is asking how to learn to be a compositor here, it’s a much larger area than what we’ll be dealing with.
