We noticed that as soon as we moved to Vray SP2 Realworld Mapping now renders with considerably more noise than previously, as if it is being rendered overly sharpened.
Admittedly previously realworld mapping, or any mapping for that matter, was occasionally too blurry in the distance, but the change in SP2 is very marked and can cause some headaches in animations, swimming textures etc. The effect is more pronounced on detailed texture maps.
I was hoping this may have come up before, but I can find no mention in any of the forums, hence starting the thread, I just hope this has been noticed by other artists, or whether Chaos can confirm if the rendering of Realworld mapping has changed in SP2?
This is visible on all of our machines, including the renderfarm, completely consistently.
Has anybody noticed this, or better still aware of a better fix than just blurring the textures excessively?
as far as I understand the mapping has nothing to do with VRay, but is controlled by MAX. you can however in your bitmap settings on mat diffuse play with the filter, pyramid, summed or none. See if it makes a difference
However that doesn’t necessarily explain why it changed in Vray SP2 though?
It was immediately noticeable, as any project we had previously rendered in SP1 and earlier without issues, changed as soon as we installed SP2, but only the objects using Realworld mapping.
Nothing has changed in V-Ray in this regard specifically. However if you have a scene that does not work as expected, please send it to vray@chaosgroup.com or to me directly at vlado@chaosgroup.com
I have emailed you some max files as suggested, although it is apparent in any file tbh.
For everyone else these 2 images demonstrate the issue, note it becomes apparent at oblique camera angles and using detailed maps, unfortunately this covers most architectural renders
All I have changed is Vray SP1 to SP2 for the purpose of this test, and there is a marked difference?
Just checked and as I suspected scanline looks as it always did, SP1 or SP2, which is to be expected as Vray shouldn’t have any effect on Scanline renders.
Of course I had to convert the materials from Vray materials to check, which did prompt me to try using standard materials instead of Vray materials in SP2, however this rendered the same as the Vray materials in SP2, so it would suggest it’s not a Vray material issue.
