Often when I hit render, using GPU rendering, absolutely nothing happens. I have to reboot MAX to get things moving.

Can you provide a little bit more details about this issue ? Is it related to specific scene ? Does the system freezes or is still responsive after a render click ?
Which option for rendering you are using, VFB last render, production render, VFB toolbar ?
What about if you try different rendering options- Export and render or IPR ?
