I’ve submitted this issue to Chaos support and they are not able to replicate the issue so I’d like to ask if any forum Maya users have ever encountered this issue.
I am able to replicate it with the following steps
create a sphere
create a light dome
change the view to Top Orthographic view
turn on resolution gate and gate mask and frame the sphere in the center
render. The sphere should render perfectly centered
change the camera to a Vray physical camera
Render. should be black. Is this a lighting issue? Ok, reduce F-Stop and increase the ISO to brighten it up in the vray physical camera settings. Screen is white. no sphere. try alpha channel in the VFB. still no sphere.
turn off Orthographic view in the camera settings and zoom in and render. now there is a sphere.
turn orthographic view back on in the camera settings. there is a sphere but does not match resolution gate anymore
in the viewport go to View>Predefined Bookmark>Top
sphere is gone again.
turn off Treat as vray physical camera in the camera settings.
sphere is back.
turn on Treat as vray physical camera in the camera settings.
sphere is gone again. why is it disappearing?
I experience this in Maya 2022-2025, Vray 6 and 7, CPU and GPU.
Its making top orthographic renders impossible. Yes I can leave the top camera as a Maya camera but then the exposure wont match the perspective vray physical camera.
I got the same result as you but…
If you change the “Specify FOV” from the physical camera settings to any other option it then updates. Even switching it back to “From maya camera” updates the VFB. must be a little bug.
You always need to increase the light intensity when using Physical cam.
When you do that, the camera is no longer Orthographic. You will see its been unchecked under Orthographic Views in the camera settings. And you cant even check it back on until you change the FOV back to “from maya camera”. You can actually rotate the camera when you change the FOV setting which is not supposed to happen with orthographic cameras. Thanks for confirming you are seeing the same issue, though.
I would think this should be a high priority since Anima 6 just came out with traffic simulations as this is a common view for traffic simulations or any top down city view (plan view).
On my side it looks like the objects are really far away rather than not rendering at all. As stezza mentioned, if you zoom in a lot for the scenario you specified, the sphere will come into view.
Nonetheless, this is a bug and I’ve logged it (internal tracker:VMAYA-13541) for the devs to have a look at. Thanks for the report.
Hi there, Is there any possibility this will get fixed in the final Vray 7 Update 2? Its still happening in the Nightly builds making orthographic cameras unusable with vray physical cameras.
