Ocean uneven leveling

Sorry if this is a basic thing, but i’ve tried several options and online help etc, but i cannot make the transition between the grid and the ocean mesh to be even… Default settings for ocean sim already have this issue by default… Also rendering settings are default. Displacement is off too. Tried other initial fill up values and matching the ocean level value with it but same issue. Tried longer sims and different resolutions, always same issue…

Any ideas?

Vray 3.45.01

you have to adjust the rendering ocean level precisely, equal value with the corresponding simulator parameter is not enough, it’s just a good starting point. in your case you have to increase it

Is there any formula to achieve the exact level, or just trial and error? Sounds a bit counter intuitive until you find the right value for example 52.354. Specially when you have a high density simulation, and to simply do a test render it takes a bit of time to check the values. Sorry if this sounds a bit of a basic question, i’m a new phoenixfd user, so far i’m very excited, but this little problem with ocean rendering caught me off guard :stuck_out_tongue:

Found out that u can see the ocean mesh in the viewport and adjust it there. Much faster this way

Yup, the thing is that the liquid in the fishtank could slightly subside or raise up during simulation and whether this happens and how strong the effect is cannot be predicted and depends on many different factors, including what geometry is there in the container. We could automatically calculate the average height of the container for each frame, but then the ocean would start bouncing up and down during animation  We are yet to figure a more convenient way than adjusting this manually…

if there was a formula we would integrate it in the level calculations
unfortunately the simulation equilibrium level is hard to predict and that’s why manual adjustment is needed.

Ok so i’m having this issue with the ocean where the boundary initially goes up and down for a while, what would be the best approach to have a stable ocean mesh boundaries? Right now just a simple tank without any object or interaction, even after 250 frames the ocean mesh keeps going up and down, it never stabilizes…

this may be a symptom of low spf

I even tried SPF 4, 6 etc.. always same issues… Max 2015 btw… I’m trying in 2017 soon to see if it’s some random issue.. Already saw other ocean tuts on phoenix 2.2 and there were no problems, so i’m trying to guessing now

Same issues with max 2017, i simply cannot have a seamless transition between grid mesh and ocean mesh, no matter what ocean level, SPF value, and resolution.

Here’s a screen.

edit: I opened the scene ship from the 2.2 tutorial, did the sim, and same issue happened, while on the tutorial it didn’t happen.

did you decrease the resolution of the ship scene?

I tried both with original resolution (around 50m) and 1M, same issue…

no, i mean the cell count.

No, i didn’t touch anything. Just pressed sim… You can download and try it and see if u have the same issue has i do, right now i can’t do anything with ocean mesh because of this and we already started production…

Hey,

Could you check with this one: Chaos Docs

It’s updated since 2.2, so this one should work better with the FLIP solver.

We will update the other examples’ download links and videos in this section shortly, so all of them would be up-to-date.

Cheers!

Tried with that version and same issue, didn’t change anything… It’s even more noticeable in animation, it just goes up and down inside the grid.

Also i tried the newest ocean tut with just the cylinder and same thing happens, there’s no way around to solve this issue. 2nd screen i tried to manually adjust the ocean lvl, in this frame its ok, but in animation it keeps going up and down and you can clearly notice it in animation, so it’s unusable…

Funny thing is in several youtube videos from 2.2 ocean, i can never spot this issue…

Hm, then the only thing left would be if you could send the scene over to Support and they’ll have a look first hand.

Thanks!

Did you solve this issue?

I’ve found that setting smoothness to 0 eliminated the issue for me.

Perhaps the mesh is being inadvertently smoothed around the fishtank?
Maybeit should be smoothed out with the ocean level instead?

Good clue! The scene didn’t reach me, so I suppose Support have found a solution or workaround, but will take a note to check the smoothing. Thanks!

Hey, no i didn’t manage to solve this issue… workaround was… Houdini. :frowning:
