i’ve been lurking for quite a while now and finally have something (hopefully) worthwhile to post. these were a few stills rendered for an animation that became a sort of “intro” and “outro” for a sales pitch for one of our clients (the theme was the evolution of an antique home to a modern one). i was responsible for materials, lighting, rendering, compositing, and modeling (except for the desk clock, by darren butler, and some of the basic furniture--which was taken from old prop libraries and heavily modified). this was delivered sometime in february, but i just recently got permission to show it.
this board has been a huge source of knowledge and inspiration for me, and i just wanted to say “thanks!”
Masterful lighting job, man.
Love the feeling of the old wallpaper, love the contrast, love the attention to details.
Inspiring stuff, man.
I’m sure our flames just lit the way
Nice work, I think the “old” was taken to a much higher level of care and detail than the “new”. The “new” just feels empty and undesigned.
I’d love to know how you achieved the wallpaper on the “old” version. I once had to do a wallpaper almost exactly like that and had a difficult time achieving results that good.
austerity aside, i suppose it’s a bit too obvious where most of my effort went. i agree the modern version could’ve used more “love”.
eric >> nice to finally join you! i hadn’t thought of putting up the animation, but i don’t see why i couldn’t. i wasn’t particularly fond of it, but maybe a little down-res’ing would help me out.
dynedain >> i’m flattered! when i get a moment i’ll post some info on the wallpaper.
jacksc02: yeah, it looks like kris is just getting warmed up. hope to see great things from him.
darren: dude, are you kidding? the clock was everything.. that and the book, which i totally stole credit for..
corey: u sux.. funny thing about this project, the client saw your victoria by the bay intro (at least i think that was yours) with the coffee cup and wanted like, the exact same thing. i had a tough time living up to it! i think we probably should’ve just gave them that and pocketed the change. 8)
ahhhh…Victoria, I was thinking of that when I saw the image.
Your just missing the eye glasses and cup of tea on the table.
It looks great though, but damn you guys need to start putting color on the walls, the old image has so much more life and interest because of the color.
It would be cool to see you guys, especially on projects like this to highlight points of interest with the lighting, or even do it in the comp.
What I mean is possibly subtly darken down the areas behind the table and draw your eye into a certain area, if you darkened the room and added some vol-light shining down on the desk, it would be really nice touch.
Your stuff is looking much better, now just take it to that next level.
you’re absolutely right.. it’s sometimes too easy to slip into the “arch-viz” mode and forget that this should be a piece of art with deliberate touches to bring together the image as a whole.
as for the color on the walls, yeah it would definitely help the vms--right now it’s an “as requested” thing.. i think we should just blanket everything with artistic license and put it where we want it.
