Outlines different lineweights, why?

Hi,

In some situations, the fact that outlines have different lineweights is not good.

Check for example the image below. There are at least 3 different outline lineweights for those walls, which makes the diagram look very messy.

It would be good to choose between equal/not equal lineweights.

Thank you!

Hey @FloatingVolume , thanks a lot for your feedback.

I’ll gladly file a dedicated feature request to allow you to also have all-equal outlines in your project accordingly. Let me know in case you want to add anything further to it!

For me it looks like a bug/issue, but if votes for a feature request are need, please add one for me.

@FloatingVolume : Did you get all lines if you explode the model? Maybe this works as workaround.

@Micha , it’s on purpose that the outlines have different thicknesses. I’ve happily added your vote to the topic!

Now I’m curious - what is the reason for the different lines? The image from Bodgan looks not good, but maybe the user can be adapt to the software.

@Micha , the different thicknesses are defined by how the adjacent surfaces are related to each other.

Hi @Demian_Gutberlet ,

Thank you for looking into this!

@Micha , exploding the polysurfaces has no effect on lineweights unfortunately.

This didn’t use to be the case though. For us this feels like a bug as well. Renders with outlines on look very weird now (it actually looks much better in the preview window then the final render).

I think if the user is not happy and has no idea how to use a “feature” let us call it a bug. Please try to better understand the users needs.

I have posted an issue about this two weeks ago: Enscape 2.4.0.417 preview vs render

I think we are seeing the same.

It didn’t use to be like this. Pre-2.4 outlines came out much nicer.

I’ve not been able to see any differences in outline output if you compare 2.3 with 2.4, so is there maybe any chance you could send me a comparison screenshot? Or let me know in which version this behavior was different?

Hey Demian,

I’ll try to set that up asap.

@Thomas_Willberger might remember this: very early on (I think 1.8 or before) outlines would only appear on certain edges. So half the edges were always missing. We filed a request to improve that and then from 1.9 (could have been later) the edge quality got a drastic improvement. However, somewhere along the way (2.2, 2.3?) it seemed we are now back to the old behavior but only whenexporting. The preview window still shows all the outlines but the render drops a bunch of them. It looks really off.

I’m not sure which version this happened because we haven’t outputted conceptual renderings for a long time. We just started 5 new projects in the office and now conceptual renderings are very relevant again

If I had to make a guess, it seems like the outlines are only being rendered when there is empty space behind them (similar to the silhouettes effect native to Revit). I really think that is a wrong call. If you really want to add a silhouetting effect, it should be an extra option to make the silhouette edges thicker (but it should never drop the normal edges). In our case we just want the edges as we see them in the preview window, nothing less, nothing more

We have not changed anything in the outline detection from 2.3 to 2.4. Therefore, I’m also very interested in 1:1 comparisons. We create these comparison images automatically for internal quality assurance and they do not show a difference.

Couldn’t we not stay on the question - is there a chance to get equal outlines on all edges? I’m sure it will match the basic need of the most users and this was the first question of the thread. Any other effect could be enabled as extra feature.

I agree with the above. I might be wrong about the difference between 2.3 and 2.4 but I am absolutely confident that somewhere along the way this changed. Perhaps this happened more than a year ago and it went undetected because we weren’t creating conceptual images with outlines on, but we are now and they don’t look good.

We’ve been doing screencaptures the last few weeks but that really sucks. I want nice and crisp 4k output with decent outlines

Sure, we may add that option in a future version to have other/solid/better outlines. If it had accidentally gotten worse, it would have had top priority to fix such a central feature. Thats why I was asking, I’m not denying that we can improve on this end.

Ok tested it with different versions and you were right @Thomas_Willberger , the behavior has not changed in the last releases.

We probably didn’t notice this because most of our teams were in construction (not outputting conceptual images). We’ve wrapped up a bunch of projects and starting new ones, putting out a lot of conceptual renders. The quality of the outlines on 4k has been disappointing.

There is just such a huge difference between what we see on the Enscape preview window (where the outlines look perfect) and the export (especially if you go 4K). I would hope that you would be able to get more consistency between the two (ideally change the exports to match the preview window better).

We have changed the outline behavior so that it remains visually identical across different resolutions. It will probably included in the next preview.

That is awesome news Thomas!

Looking forward to test.

Thanks to the team to make this happen, much appreciated!

Great! And I forgot to mention: The outlines now exclude the grass and vegetation, now it’s not full of dark noise anymore
