In our office we are currently working on a parking garage facade featuring a lot of perforated metal panels that are part of a repetitive pattern. I’ve been experimenting using the Revit materials cutout feature to visualize all the holes in the panels. It took some effort and trial end error to get the right textures in the right place.
The main pattern is generated using Rhino and Grasshopper from a source image file, and creates the cutouts as curves and hatches in Rhino as well as an excel file storing information wich panel has what texture, colour, position and so on. The cutout textures are then created by exporting the hatches to illustrator and saved as image files. Finally I’m using Grasshopper with Rhino.Inside.Revit to read from the excel file what cutout image and colour should be assigned to what panel. Then the GH script creates the Revit materials with the corrsponding texture and color and assign the material to each panel, as well as centers the texture based on the panel size. All in all around 200 different Revit materials.
The rest of the model is mostly IFC-files from other subcontractors and as such they hold no material information and are a simple grey colour.
