Playing with rector water and caustics

Hello,

just a little test I made with reactor water.
Works quite well !!
Rendertime was ~2min per frame with a precalculated Irr.Map.

heh, very cool  Maybe the light should be a bit stronger to see the reflection caustics a bit better.

Best regards,
Vlado

Nice! What was your subdivision for the water? Looks pretty smooth.

Best regards,

A.

Thats Cool, definetly like to see more, and some explaination.

The caustic subdiv. for the direct light were 6000.

The water object itself is made of a spline and a “Garment Maker”. I than used
a “Mesher” object to turn the spline/Garment into a mesh and added a relax modifier on top.
I used a mesher because the linked reactor spacewarp is a worldspace mod. so you can´t add
a relax on top. The mesh is ~180 000 polys.

I´m currently rendering the same scene in an indoor scenario with underwater lights. The frames that allready rendered, look amazing. I ´ll post it tomorrow. Here a preview

looks great. which spacewarp did you use?

Absolutely beautiful patterns you’ve got there! Can’t wait to see the whole sequence finished.

Since now most of the effect is directly visible, how about a direct calculation of the caustics to get the most detail out of your render? :sunglasses: (Assuming that it’s still accessible in the vray build you’re using, I haven’t played with it since rc3 or 1… )

Best regards,

A.

yes - wow - that’s fricking brilliant.
you’ve desperately got to do a quick tutorial - i would love to know how to do this!

what are your caustic settings?

Tutorial imo as well  Excellent job

Very nice!

The indoor one looks fantastic!

Caustics really are a breeze to use. Using area lights can make things a little tricky tho as you often need really high light caustic photon subdivs to get a nice results. But with direct lights its great.

ok.. here is the final animation.

http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/s\_caustics\_01.mov

The caustics are maybe a bit strong.. but anyway…quite mesmerizing
rendertime was ~7min per frame (intel Q6600)
I placed two omni lights inside the pool.
The caustic settings:
(units setup: display units metric/meters. System units 1 unit is one 1 centimeter)
Global Multiplier 1000 (because of the omni´s)
search distance: 0,3m
max photons: 200
max density: 0,0005m
caustic subdivisons for the omni´s: 3000
(surprisingly it even looks very good with just 1500 subdivs.)

@DaForce: yes.. sometimes you really need high settings. For the first animation
I used 6000 subdivs.. In this case I was really surprised that 3000 and even less give
these smooth results.

@bluescreen2: reactor water is implemented as spacewarp. you can find it in
create/spacewarps/reactor

if I find the time I will make a little tutorial of this test.

cheers,

sam

Awesome! :sunglasses:

Best regards,

A.

Really great, you have it nailed. I want to play!!

Yeah, me too! Looks fantastic! I want to try this with dreamscape water.

Waiting patiently for the tut!

looks amazing!

great test!..and u should definetely make a tutorial out of this!

samuel_bubat, any pointers on this? I’d love to know how to do this and have a project in mind also.

Really great stuff man.

Nice

Nice make a tutorial out of this

I didn´t not yet find the time to make a tutorial out of this.
So I will share the file. It should be rather self explanatory.
you need to run reactor, because the file would be 700mb with
pre calculated waves. Just open the reactor dialog from the utilities panel
make sure time is set from 0-500 (substeps 10, Havok1 Solver) and hit “create Animation”
The creating world phase can take up to several minutes.
Please also read my previous posts in this thread especially about the Mesher object !
In this file I decreased the caustic photons of each light from 3000 to 1500 because the results are
still smooth ! I did not use any exposure, this is why the water level is very close to the
upper rim of the pool. If I would put it a bit lower, the pool walls, not touched by water would
be extremly overbright. If you have any questions, please post them here,

sam

thanx!
will check it out asap!

Fantastic results! Thanks for sharing the file.
