Here’s a little render I did playing with water & bumpmap. Physical Camera off - lit by straight HDRI.

hi man, very interesting, nice camera shot, but your mapping is not that good. Your waves is to little and we can see cleary the two bump texture joing.
My english is not good, but if u understand, try to fix it and will be very very good.

Andeciuala, thanks for the comment! I will try and change those things. To make the waves bigger, would I simply increase the texture size within sketchup, or increase the multiplier of the bump? This should also solve the issue with the seem between the texture. This is my first try at water in Vray. Hopefully I can get better.

wow. very nice water. ande pointed out already the tiling. if you want send me the texture i will make it seamless. anyway nice use of bump. if you want to see more things under the water, you can darken the Fresnel color.

its, better, but, i’d like to share one more information, your are using a bitmap on bump, ant the quality of this bitmap is very low, so we can see the pixels of this image. Try to use noise on your waves, it will improove your quality.

I noticed the pixelation in the close up. I will try the noise in the bump and see how that works.
I also forgot to mention that in the pool, I have a surface textured with the diffuse material that is about a foot below the surface of the water. This allowed me to darken the fresnel color and still pick up the blue tones for the water.

Is there a way to upload the vismat setting? If I put it in the repository that would be a bit redundant, because it’s the same one basically from there.

How can I make my displacement better for the water? This is the result I got from just adding the same noise map under displacement. My displacement settings are 4/256/1 What should I adjust to make the waves larger? My material size is the same as the above render, only thing I changed was adding the displacement map. Also, my render time increased from 40 minutes on the ones above, to over 5 hours for this one. Is that normal? Is there any trick to decreasing render times when using displacement mapping?

what u need to do is to increase the size of ur noise map. and you can play around with the settings to get better results. that render time is a bit unusual! what are the specs of ur machine?

My machine is running with an Intel Q6700 Quadcore, 6 GB Ram, NVDIA 9500 Geforce and Vista 64 bit. I bought this machine for faster rendering specifically. VRay has been considerably faster than the other renderers I use, except with handling displacement. Any ideas? Also, how do you turn on the feature that shows the render time on outputs?

I solved some of my issues. I think my speed issues where due to having other trial water material that I forgot to delete from VRay. I also had a few .tif materials that could’ve caused some slow down. When I removed the irrelevant textures, my render time was back to normal. This allowed me to do some further testing of my water. I think I’m finally happy with it. I actually took a glass texture out of the repository and added a water texture to the diffuse. I changed the IOR to 1.33. Set a noise displacement map with the setting 4.5 amp/1.5 freq/size 8 with a multiplier of .15.
