Problem with color management work flow with wide gamut monitor.

Hi guys, maybe some one can help with this.

I have a Dell monitor 2408 wfp calibrated with spyder 3 pro. And Using max in linear work flow.

I’ve done some test trying to get the same colors around 3dmax(non color managed) & photoshop (color managed) .

I first made 3 textures in photoshop, the first one named terrazo, the second one named concrete, and the third one named green.

The terrazo, and concrete files come from photographs and the green one is a green color made in fotoshop values (R:89,G:176,B:103).

The next step, I convert and saved each as a .jpg but in three diferent versions applying three different icc profiles (ex: terazo srgb, terazo argb and terrazo monitor). This three different versions looking exactly the same in PS.

Then in create a max scene with 3 towers, each tower made of 3 chamfer box.
The 3 boxes in each tower has diferents materials.

The first tower (from left to right) has the 3 maps (terrazzo, concrete , and green) applied in the A RGB version. The second tower the 3 maps applied in S RGB version, and the last tower the 3 maps applied with the monitor profile.

I render the scene and the result is the different towers (talking about color).

Then I save the image like a jpg and name it TEST 1.

Then open it in PS And assign the image the color profile of my monitor.
All colors mach perfectly as in the VFB.

This is cool !!! … B U T … if I want to convert the image into a regular color space such us srgb or argb, the problems start to appear.

What I see is that if I convert this image into a different color space, only the third tower that was mapped with the monitos icc profile maps, stays the same. The other 2 towers comes with color shifting.

So ive made my first conclusion . All maps have to enter 3DMAX profiled with the monitor’s profile. And when the render is finished. You have to assign the monitos profile to the final image. Then if you want to convert this image to an other color space there is no problem, and the colors will stay the same (or extremely close).

So I said perfect perfect I solved my problem!!!

The only thing is to profile all my maps library with the monitor profile and continue with this work flow.

But…

Ive made another test.

Exactly the same test as test 1 but with one more chamfer box at the top of each tower. Now tis box with a red color made in 3DMAX inside the material editor.

This is a vray material with a vray color at the diffuse chanel (R:1,G:0.B:0) with rgb multiplier at 1 , and alpha at 1.
Gamma correction at none , and gamma value at 2.2

Render the new scene. Save it as test 2.

At PS I open the image (test 2) and assigne the monitor’s color profile. The image look exacty the same as in the VFB.

Cool again!!

BUT…

Here is the problem I want to solve!
If I convert the image to another color space, the results are the same as in TEST 1 , but the new Box with the red color created in 3DMAX changes of color!!!

So, if I have a scene with materials that came from bitmaps, I will see in PS and in 3dmax the same colors, and the final image converted to any profile will be the same also.

But if my scene have materials made in 3DMAX with rgb values, I will have color shiftings when I convert it to another profile different as the monitors profile.

Please !!! ? some one knows what is the correct workflow working with bitmaps , as well as with colors made in MAX?
