Problem with using a JPEG as a flat background in Corona 12 + 3ds Max 2024

Hi, I’m trying to render an object inside an existing photo. My goal is to have a JPEG as a flat backplate in the render (not lit by scene lights, not spherical like an HDRI).

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Using the Corona Camera → Overrides → Direct Override: works fine with a solid CoronaColor (e.g. red), but when I load my JPEG it shows up as a spherical environment, stretched and not matching my camera frame.

Looked for the old “Background operator” in the Corona VFB (used to be under Post in earlier versions), but I can’t find it in Corona 12.

Tried enabling “Use Camera Scene Environment” in Render Setup → Scene Environment. No luck.

End result: I either get no background (alpha), or the JPEG is distorted / scaled like an environment map, not a flat backplate.

Setup:

3ds Max 2024

Corona Renderer 12

Does anyone know if the Background operator was renamed/removed in Corona 12, or what the correct workflow is now for placing a JPEG as a backplate that aligns with the camera but is not afected by lighting setup?

Thanks!

Hi,

It seems your issue is not setting environment mapping right in the texture node, it needs to be set to screen and not spherical. If you’re using regular bitmap, you will find it in coordinates rollout at the top. For Corona bitmap, look for it in environment mapping section, below coordinates settings.

You need to assign the bitmap to direct override either globally in render setup scene tab, or per camera in Corona camera overrides rollout.

You must been confusing something, there never was such operator in old, nor in the new VFB. The only way to setup background override is like i described it above.

And if you want that your background won’t be affected by the scene lighting, plug the texture to the Corona tonemap control map uncheck its exposure and tone mapping checkboxes and then plug the tonemap node to the direct override.

Yup, what Romullus said.
