Problems with Linear Lights

I’m having a problem using linear lights…they are casting shadows as if from point lights. :?: :?:

(ignore the fact that the lights are too dark, colors, etc…just tryin to get this resolved first)

Dynedain…
would it be possible to post your model so we can have a look ?

Here’s the stripped down versions…just the lights, floors, walls, and ceiling

yo
you need to tick … smooth surface shodows then area shodows, the your UVW size …you need to increase to …like 50 for each …looks much better.

Natty

are you going to use GI ??
cos if you are it would be a lot easier if you light the scene with no lights but with self illuminated materials…and crank up the gi for the material.

Just a sugestion…

Natty

I am going to use GI

which would be faster when it comes to rendering?

Just another thought …did you know you can get a vray light and stretch it …like in the y direction …to elongate it …might work …
but i think i would use a self illuminated mat with loads of gi coming out of it …see if that works.

Natty

I’m playing right now w/ using a vray light…and it seems to work…but takes longer to render

I already am using some self illumination on those…i’m not sure how i would go about boosting the GI coming off of them though (using irradience mapping because i havent figured photon mapping out yet)

I tried the settings you mentioned, and while they soften up the shadow, they don’t solve the shadow error…i’m doing a more blown-out render right now to emphasize it

hi
try turning your shodaws from sphere to box…sometimes that help’s.
on the self iluminated mat you need to overide it with vrayMTLwrapper…
and from there you can turn the gi up.
or you can do it from Object settings in the vray roll out …

hmmm…ok…i’ll try that…thanks

meanwhile, this is clarification of the problem:

The shadows of the ceiling structure circled in red should look like the shadows circled in blue.

use the gi …its works a lot better

I had turned off GI in that rendering to try to figure out what was causing problems…I’ve been playing around with the settings though for the self illumination material GI and I’ve gotten it to work quite nicely:

Thanks for the help!

hey…thats better…
