Progressive Rendering Threshold

Hello there.
I guess I have here some kind of confusion. As I understood the rendertime while progressive rendering is limited by a) the timespan given or b) the threshold value. So I tried to check the rendertime limit by threshold. Even the threshold was reached, the rendering did not stop for additional 10min…

What do I misunderstand?

Add a sampleRate render element, and you’ll be able to tell what happens.

As for the noise threshold, what you see in the log is the NL of a percentage of the pixels on screen (I think it’s between 70 and 90%).
If you have tiny, very bright spots, sampling may carry on there until max AA has been reached, regardless of the rest of the pixels being safely below NT.

Thank you for clarification.

I think you have mistaken the " noise threshold" with the " noise threshold goal" here.
VRay starting from 3.3 use what’s called dynamic noise threshold for progressive rendering.
VRay will use a high noise threshold goal at the start of the rendering and when a good amount of pixels reach this threshold Vray will lower it till it gets to the one that the user specified under the render setting and then continue refining till all the pixels meet this value ( of course, if it didn’t reach the time limit first)
With this "dynamic noise threshold " method ,VRay will make sure that the amount of noise is relatively uniformly distributed and you won’t have an area where it is too clean where other areas are still noisy.
In your scene when VRay set the noise threshold goal to 0.019 that only mean Vray is currently trying to reach this for all the pixels so it will needs more time to get there.
I think this came up here in the forum several times so there should be a note somewhere in the documentation about it.

Ok, I’ll look again. I obviously missed that, or I somehow remember, what “somebody” said in some “vray 5.0 training”. Thx again.
