RC5 25% faster than SP2 and little better quality!

Hi

i try this scene and i found that with RC5 i have a little better render (less noise) in -25% render time!!!

Why this gap? This images are .bmp, so compression.

System is Octa 5440 2.83 with 8 Gb RAM. the RC5 test is made with 3ds max 2008 32bit. The SP2 with 3ds max 2008 64bit. Render with QMC + QMC+ DOF + AA DMC

You did not seem to render these on the same machine? (one says 4096 MB, and the other one 8192 MB)

Best regards,
Vlado

even then, this shouldnt matter. I think what matters more is the approach. QMV vs DMC is most important test.
But things have changed so much since RC 5, Im not sure one can compare settings on “one to one” basis anymore.

Hi,

i use a 3ds max 2008 32bit+RC5 & 3ds max 2008 64bit+SP2 and on the same machine (XP64), so 3ds max 32bit recognize only 4 Gb Ram.

Can you test this on the same 3ds Max version? In my experience, there may be significant performance difference between 32- and 64-bit builds of 3ds Max and V-Ray, even for the exact same V-Ray version.

Vlado

Hi Vlado,

sure! But i don’t remember if RC5 works on 64bit (i don’t have it. I’ve only RC5 32bit). For now i can render with VRay 1.5 SP2 32bit and 64bit. See you later

Yep, I meant you should compare 32-bit RC5 with 32-bit SP2.

Vlado

Hi Vlado,

this is the Bech with

3ds max 2008 32bit VRay 1.5 SP on XP64machine.

(*). XP64 - 3dsmax2008 32bit - RC5 - 13min 10 sec
(*). XP64 - 3dsmax2008 32bit - SP2 - 14min 57sec
(*). XP64 - 3dsmax2008 64bit - SP2 - 17min 31 sec

And the noise from SP2 32bit and 64bit is totaly different. I try to render in network with 32 and 64 machine and if you compare SP2 64 (only 64bit machine Octa) with SP2 network (64bit machine & 32bit Prescott) you can see the 32bit bucket becouse the noise is different.

Bye

well 13 min and 14 min is much more believable to me. Why its slower on 64 bit…thats another question.
Also I think it would make sence to compare them on 32 bit windows all together. However I think overall RC was faster then final.

Morbid Angel,

i’ve no time to formatting and reinstall the OS  . But, for now there are

--- 13min 10sec VS 14min 57sec ---

like 2 min or 12%. It’s a little high difference, no?

Are the noises the same between the 32 bit SP2 and the RC5? As the qmc and then dmc evolved it was possible to get similar results with looser settings. If you increase the noise threshold or the adaptive amount slightly in SP2 are you able to match the speed and quality?

and what is the last image you posted? Says SP2 and 13:56?

As I suspected the GI detail is finer in the SP2 render, by zooming into the back of the image I think it is apparent.

Actually it looks like RC 5 has more detail to me!

Look at how spread out the gi is on the RC5, spread out over twice as many pixels, also look at the overall sharpness of the extrusions…

This actually looks ok to me; the noise pattern is certainly different but I can’t really tell if one is better in any way than the other.

As for difference between the noise pattern between 32- and 64-bits, it is likely that the same will happen in RC5 even to a greater extent.

Finally, for the difference in render times, it is not too great really; and image sampling has changed significantly since RC5 to be accountable for this. On the other hand, other parts of the renderer have become faster…

Best regards,
Vlado

If you watch the areas I’ve circled nobody thinks the SP2 look clearer and better defined?

Hard to tell really  I think that the overall noise level is about the same. It might be a little smoother in SP2…

Best regards,
Vlado

I agree !! very hard to tell…

But now we have to deal with Sp2… The difference between 1.5 Rcs and SP2 is so huge than I can live with slower renderer…

But would be nice to know why ?

Best regards.

Hi RErender

is a network Octa 64bit VRay 64bit SP2 + 3 Prescott 32bit SP2. I want to see the difference. If you scoll with full Octa SP2 64bit (17min) with Network render SP2 32bit (13min 56 sec) , you can recognize the buckets by 32bit machine.

And i agree with all. The noise level is ± about the same. And yes, i can live with 25% but with all features in SP2, but why this slowdonwn? Is better -25%, not +25% rendertime  I don’t know if the fault is Windows, SP or 32 or 64bit, but this difference is a little to high IMO. Maybe, in the next SP, Chaosgroup found the solution

Bye

cecofuli

set up some test with caustics high reflections and low glossies, etc, etc
that would be some serious comparison imo.
Cause from my experience vray has become faster comparing the same noise levels and AA sampling, but as the sampler changed so did the values used imo.
