Can some one help, i am looking at using the office farm and workstations to render from home.
does anyone know if this is possible? if so what are the bit rates / connection required.
basically means i can get home to see the wife!

Hi Simon,
I think using some sort of VNC software might be a better solution than actually sending your network renders across the internet. I’ve been using basic windows remote desktop to login to my workstation at work from home for a few years now and it works ok. Obviously viewport speed isn’t good but it’s enough to check the progress of jobs and tweak settings and resend jobs etc.
I keep meaning to look into alternative VNC software as I can’t imagine a freebie that ships with windows is the best there is. I’d be interested to hear what others think as well.

We do have a <SonicWall security switch blabla… thing>, so for us, it is possible, as my home machine becomes part of the office network… just have to map the good drives.
Even if it works, it is still better for me to log on in my Office machine using VNC, or LogMeIn, The scene works faster… viewport quality becomes not adequate.
I guess it is all depending of the size of the scene you are working on..
agreed i also remote desktop once i get under 15fps theres no way i can adjust the viewport.
Assuming a Windows XP environment, you should consider Remote Desktop. VNC crashes regularly.
When in remote, ensure that 3ds is running in OpenGL.
