Realistic Glass tint material - need help

I’m trying to create glass material that mimics the real world. We have a project where we are looking at applying a 3M product to the glass to reduce the amount of light is transmitted through the glass. These have a Visible Light Transmitted percentage of 20%, 24%, 33% and 41%.

I couldn’t find a way to change light transmission with the Glass Material, only with the Generic Material. Here are my settings for the 20% - setting the opacity to 80%. But when I set them up this way and applied to both sides of panel of glass I see no change in the amount of light that is transmitted to the back wall of this image…only the glass seems to change in appearance.

Is there a better way to do this, does Enscape not have the ability to do this? Please help?

Changing to Glass material and leaving the settings alone doesn’t seem to change the light transmission either.


I saw one suggestion to use Foliage, but I don’t understand how you can tweak the transmittance with the settings that are available…

Maybe their used to be settings available, but I don’t see them anymore…

It seems nothing works.

It’s either 100% masked (shadow) or 100% clear.

You could set a reflection map for the exterior face of each sheet of glass.

I’m unsure how that would create a screened shadow. Could you point to some examples?

About the only solution I have come up with is the following…

Foliage and a dot screen that allow the 20% of light through. Has to be on the front surface of the material so I will have to render two different images and photochop them together.

The problem I have with this is that I can’t get the dot pattern small enough to not show off the dots.

No matter if it is the original scale or 1/10 or 1/1000 the size of the pattern in the shadow stays about the same. I can never get to a smooth non textured looking shadow. Thoughts?

Anyone know if it utilizing V-Ray would be able to produce what I am trying to achieve?

It looks like you can bring an Enscape project into V-Ray…just wondering if moving to a ray-tracing platform might be better than fighting in Enscape?

Probably. Enscape is targeted for real-time rendering and makes trade-offs to do so. Try V-Ray or Corona.

We were playing with Lumion to see if it could do what I was trying to accomplish, it seems that ray tracing might be the key.

I like that maybe I wouldn’t have to start from scratch with V-Ray. I’ll have to look at Corona and see what it’s about.

are you just looking to darken the light coming through? Why not just use the opacity slider, combined with the color of your choice? Did you make sure the material is applied to both sides of each face in SketchUp? (I guess that will be four sides for your windows, two for the outside and two for the inside - hope this makes sense edit I realized that based on your graphic (is it two separate glass panes with two sides each?) That then means 8 sides to apply the material on in SketchUp :D). If this doesn’t work, it could be that you’re not using a graphics card with Hardware accelerated Ray-Tracing support. But I suspect the material is not applied to all sides of all the surfaces, and one of them missed will break the effect.

That’s what I am looking to do, but haven’t had any success. I will look to see if hardware acceleration ray tracing is a setting I can check. Thanks!

Okay - you were right!

All ray-trace boxes were unchecked.

Trying to rerender now to see if what the differences are.

Also, wondering if I need all these checked or if I can still get the results but speed up rendering if fewer were checked. I’ll investigate unless you already know.

That’s what I needed. The Ray-Traced Sun Shadows being turned on did the trick.

I ended up turning off the other two that were off before to get it to render in minutes instead of hours.
