Recommendation for good free/share/cheap HTML web design software

Any suggestions for a good bit of software for designing HTML websites? Ideally freeware/shareware/cheap and with a helping hand GUI rather than having to rely on pure HTML coding.

I was looking some time ago for an HTML editor; I found one or two solutions but all of them were lacking and produced awful HTML code. I had to go back to my old Dreamweaver MX.

I’d be curious what other people are using too.

Best regards,
Vlado

nvu is said to b quite nice tho i never used it:

On i really like myself is aptana:

Cheers Thorsten - will check them out.

Nvu has quite a few bugs and is no longer being developed. It is discontinued since some time now.

Still using dreamweaver but mainly for the site management and search / replace bits rather than the visual side of things - I’d normally use code view and css.

Free bit wise try http://kompozer.net/ and http://www.webon.com

I’ve used nvu and textpad, but then, my html needs aren’t exactly high end shall we say.

i’m using http://www.pspad.com/

but like dbuchhofer, my html needs are very basic

Do you also want a “WYSIWYG” interface? Where you can see what you’ve done?

Like joconnell I also use Dreamweaver for easy placing of elements (we have a license since I work for a webdeveloping company). Other than that I use wSciTE or Textpad.

You could try HTML-Kit or 1stPage 2006

I’ve found our old copy of Dreamweaver MX. Seems like that’s probably the best solution as I can use layers to generate the look of the site accuratly and then convert the layers to a table.
