I’m doing an interior scene and my client wants these types of lights -
I’ve tried Natty’s photometric method but no luck. Can anyone suggest a way of recreating this effect?

how many different ies files have you tried ?.. if you can find out what lights are used here then you can get the right ies file to create that affect.. 
The manufacturers aren’t returning my calls…

Well i just had to search for a good ies. so first i found a nice ies viewer on the net, to see a bit of ies, before loading it into the scene. it gives you a good visual feedback.

hmm what also would be better, a programm to draw your own ies file and save it. this sometimes would give much better results as browsing dozens of ies files that still dont fit.

As far as I know IES files are photometric readings taken from this huge capsule shaped device that maps out a few parameters of the globe. To draw your own I’d suggest just using a combination of decay and attenuation parameters along with a subtle, or not so, projection map. You could probably get pretty creative with this method and it may not be accurate but neither would drawing your own photometric data.
Now that I think about it…
what is photometric data in laymans terms? Do you guys think it could considered the filament power and the refracted caustics of the bulb itself?

Hi all
Well the point of drawing your own ies is simple.
For example i´ve loaded a ies, from one of nattys tutorials here from the forum. It has a very expressive ies file with strong and good lightpatterns, that fit perfect into a room inwhich for example you show photos or drawings.
Well i loved the lightpatterns, but on the inside of the airbus cabin for the flightcrew, that i do by the moment, this ies is much to spread through the very small cabin.
only thing i would like to do is some sort of bezier thing on a simple paper, draw the outline of my ies as i like it , and see what it is like.
when you´ve seen some dozens of ies files withtheir light contribution curves you very soon get a feeeling for their behaviour and look in renderings i think.
hmm. Do you all remember, wasnt in lightscape something comparable ?
I think i remember there was a sort of 3D thing with points you coud grab and move.
i think i will install this old saurier tomorow to have a look.

Yes you are right Tom, Lightscape did have a light/ ies modifier… there must be something like this on the market … perhaps the lighting development company’s have something like this ?
A guy called Karba has made an ies generator,
