render nodes

hello all.
We have 3 licenses of vray in our studio, with 15 extra render nodes.
I would like to know how to setup and use the extra licenses nodes for speed up our animation sequence.
We use maya 2016.5 and vray 3.40 all under OS X.
Any one can explain how setup and use the extra nodes in animation.
thanks a lot

For animation you would usually want to use a render manager like backburner or deadline.
You can use the V-Ray standalone to render a given frame on a given machine, but that would require some manual setup or scripting.
The other way to go is to use DR, which would mean all machines rendering the same frame where parts of the image are distributed among those machines. Either way, that means installing only the standalone to those render node machines, where you won’t need Maya and a gui/workstation license.

Here’s what we have on our help pages: Chaos Docs
See if it’s of any use to you.

We would be interested in a ‘Dummies Guide’, for settings up DR on the Mac OS X for single images.

A basic step by step breakdown would be great.

You might want to have a look here, then: Chaos Docs

The set-up is not specific to any OS:
1. Installation: Basically, the machines that you’re only going to use for rendering, need to have V-Ray Standalone installed. This is done with the same installer that you download for V-Ray for Maya, only after agreeing to the EULA, you need to choose “Standalone Only” as your install type.
2. Licenses: Then you need to make sure your license setup is correct.
3. Running the slaves: You need to start the V-Ray render slaves - they will pick up any distributed job over your network. You can look for an executable called “Launch V-Ray Render Slave”. If you don’t want to do this manually, you can register the slave as a service (at the end of step 1: Installation).
4. Running DR: Here’s where this link comes to use: Chaos Docs - you need to tell maya what list of V-Ray slaves to look for to distribute render jobs to. And that’s pretty much it - just render with “Distributed Rendering” enabled from Maya and it should pick up any running slaves in your network.

Hi all

When I run the varieslave, I get the following error:
’ Failed to start network server: Failed to open listening port (48) ’ That’s ‘forty eight’

I’m running vray on a Mac.

Cheers

This means that there already is a server started. Can you check if it was registered as a service? You would either not need to start the server manually or disable and stop the service to be able to start it manually.

Ah yes, I installed Standalone as a service.

The vray.bin application is running, but in Maya I get the following error:
// Warning: line 1: V-Ray : Render host BIRS44DX-RNF9VN.local (10.80.1.225:20207) is not responding //

The firewall is off, so allows all incoming connections.
Is there anything else I’m missing?
Cheers

Hello,

there are a few executables in /Applications/ChaosGroup/V-Ray/maya2016.5/bin which can be used for start/stop/register/unregister render slaves in the machine that they are executed. They all need to be executed with “sudo” command:
sudo registerVRaySlaveDaemon to register V-Ray as slave for the current machine so it could start on every boot
sudo startVRaySlaveDaemon to start V-Ray as slave for the current machine
sudo stopVRaySlaveDaemon to stop V-Ray as slave for the current machine
sudo unregisterVRaySlaveDaemon to unregister V-Ray as slave for the current machine so it wont start on every boot

Now you need to stop then unregister V-Ray as slave so you won’t be getting this error message again, but you will need to start it manually every time.

Thanks for the info.

I unregistered V-Ray slave.

Used sudo registerVRaySlaveDaemon

restarted, but still the error message.

I tried manually starting the slave:
sudo startVRaySlaveDaemon

and restarting the Client mac but have the same error.

Is there anythings else I’m missing?

Does the license server need to be on the slave?

Try manually starting the vray executable, not the slave daemon (service). It should be done with a command in the terminal like this: /Applications/ChaosGroup/V-Ray/maya2016.5/vray/bun/vray -server
See if that helps.

No, the slave only needs to know where to obtain a license from. If there’s a licensing problem, there will be an explicit licensing error message.

Starting the vray executable, I’m having some errors:
(The same port 48 errors)

Do you have V-Ray installed for other Maya versions or is there a separate V-Ray Standalone installation? Maybe they have a service that’s running?

No, just for Maya 2016.
Where might I see if there is a separate service running?

When you open the Activity Monitor if a service is running there will be a “vray.bin” executable started. Also make sure that all processes are shown in the Activity Monitor.
Is it possible that you try to start/stop the render slave for Maya 2016.5 and not for Maya 2016, because all the commands for the terminal that we were posting were for Maya2016.5?

The “vray.bin” executable is running. All processes are showing.

The VRay installation is in the Maya/2016 folder and so I have been changing out ‘2016.5’ in your posts, to 2016?

The command:
‘sudo stopVRaySlaveDaemon’
Now, cannot be found.

Just wondering, should I do an uninstall and start again?

Reinstalling is not a bad option, just make sure when you make the new installation make sure you uncheck “Register V-Ray render slave as service” so vray.bin wont start on startup.
Also in the Activity Monitor you can check from where vray.bin is started by clicking on the infontmation button with “i” icon on the upper left corner and then the “Open Files and Ports” tab.
