I’ve noticed for a long time now that the render setup window takes a lot of time to open if the renderer is Vray. It takes anywhere from 3 to 5-6 seconds. Is this normal? With Scanline it takes just a second or so. The problem appears in both Max 2016 and 2017. I’ve noticed that this started happening 2-3 years ago or so. I remember the days when in Max 2009 it was pretty much instantaneous. Is something wrong with my setup or is this “normal”?
Hmm… I restarted my PC and it seems that the problem went away. Strange. Looks like it happens only after long working sessions. Anyways, it’s still twice as slow as Scanline after restart. Is this normal?
The slowdown might be caused by V-Ray checking for a valid GUI license when you open the Render Setup. Are you using a local or a remote license server?
I’m not sure to be honest. How do I check?
This has affected me for a while now as well. Not sure exactly when it started happening but also seems to be independent of any restarts. Using a local license server.
I believe you have dongle and license server running on the local (workstation) machine which is “Local”. But please confirm in order to be sure there isn’t any lag or delay caused by the license verification.
Can you try to capture this issue on a short video ?
Do you have any additional render plugins ?
Is that the same V-Ray build 3.40.02?
Yes, 3.04.02 (I just double checked it). Everything seems fine with the license as I don’t get any “license not found” or similar errors. Absolutely zero problems with acquiring the license (at least any problems that are shown to the user).

Same here …
Yep has been like this for me for ages…
That sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you hit F10 to bring up the dialog box only to realize it was already open behind another window :(…
It’s usually superfast on a clean 3ds Max installation; after a few months it starts to get worse and worse and becomes slower not only for V-Ray but for other renderers as well. All I know is that the slowdown is not caused by V-Ray itself.
Best regards,
Vlado
Agreed. It still seems faster if I switch to scanline and try to open the dialog. Not that big of deal really.
There recently was a tip by one of the Chaos-guys to delete a specific file for another renderer that is installed together with Max. This made switching between RT and Adv. a lot faster for me. Maybe it is a solution for that problem here as well?
Wow, my delays are nowhere nearly as bad as dlparisi’s are. Anyways, attached below is my recording. You’ll see it’s not as bad but still slower than scanline. It gets worse after long working session, here I’ve been working just for a while.
I just remembered that the license server is local because every time I install Vray on the workstations I chose local license server. Maybe the problem is with Max? I started having these delays after Max 2012 if I’m not mistaken. Everything up to 2012 was super fast to open. Anyways, I hate it when the UI is slow which is the case with most places in Max. I like things to be fluid as much as possible.
Hopefully Autodesk will work in this direction.

Here’s the thread…http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthread.php?89139-Slow-to-Swap Unfortunately I’ve already deleted that so no luck.

Haha exactly
+ the delay = F10 spam; results in the windows popping up for a few times with lag, the horror :')
I wonder, how many other renderers are installed?
I test a wee bit, and the slowdowns become apparent (if there is no licensing issue) only when there are a few others installed.
Now, without going down the rMan route of blaming a direct competitor (try installing both rMan and Arnold on the same maya, and set rMan as renderer, and you’ll know), are all these issues with a vanilla max and just vray as added renderer?
Otherwise we may as well be chasing ghosts.
Here
Vanilla 3ds max 2014 + Vray + pre-installed renderers = 4 seconds
3dsmax 2016 + Corona demo + Octane demo + fStorm beta + preinstalled [Vue, iray, scanline, mental, iray (how many renderers can u add Autodesk srsly)] = also 4 seconds
I am getting a 900ms to open and 50 ms to close it, in max2017 sp2, with the Max-VRay ui preset as default.
However, if i install fStorm, probably due to cuda checks, my max takes a LOT longer to start (3 to 5 times longer, i haven’t timed it precisely).
Dialog opening with just these two installed doesn’t change, however.
I’ll keep looking.
